We had the good fortune of connecting with Ci Majr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ci Majr, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
If you have a dream that is truly your dream or a passion that is truly your passion, there’s no way you could give up on it. Dreamers can’t stop themselves. It’s like a compulsion. And of course we have hard days where we might walk away from it or just need to rest. But I don’t think dreamers ever truly give up. I think we suffer minor defeats. Like that quote “lose the battle but win the war”. Sometimes it’s necessary to concede. There are the times where 1) something is completely out of your hands, 2) you’re wasting a lot of time, or 3) your mental health is suffering. After knowing I’ve given all that I can, this is when I usually step away from whatever or whoever it is. This is when I tell myself it’s ok to take a breathe. It’s ok to take a break. You’re human of course. But for people like me, artists, the fight never stops. We swim upstream, we enjoy the process, we learn from our mistakes, and we keep it moving.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’d say what sets me apart is that I’m a black queer artist making pop music. When people first meet me, and I tell them I make music they often assume I’m doing R&B. Which I don’t take offense to, but whenever others make assumptions about me it makes me question how I’m seen in the world. It surely has made me question whether I should be making pop music. I think this hits an especially tough spot because I’m one of those kids who grew up being called an oreo aka black on the outside and white on the inside aka not black enough. So I think those insecurities definitely affect me at times but now I’ve been making music for over 10 years. I’ve met so many people who support me completely and see my uniqueness as an asset which has helped me grow to see myself in the same light.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Alright here’s my list: – eat: O-ku, Iberian Pig, Woo Nam Jeong Stone Bowl House, breakfast burritos at Elmyr – drink: Buteco – activities: Hike Sweetwater Creek State Park, Starlight Drive-In Theater, thrifting at Rag-O-Rama, dance at The Basement
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My girlfriend, Anna! It means the most to have someone around me who wholeheartedly supports my ambitions and whose love really encourages growth into my authentic best self.
