We had the good fortune of connecting with Chester Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chester, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I was hungry, literally and financially, and reflecting on the decisions made in my life that got me to that point. So my mind was focused on how I was going to eat and ultimately survive the season that I was in. While on social media sites, I would see a lot of culinary entrepreneurs selling plates and offering private chef and/or catering services and some even complaining about constantly getting “ghosted” by potential clients after they have sent over the invoice and attempt to close the sale. Seeing this, I was moved to come up with a way to help these chefs solve the “ghosting” problem at the point of sale, along with other issues that they face as emerging culinary specialists. I locked myself in a basement for close to 7 hours while I created the idea and concept for MobiChef.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career started in fast food and quickly moved into sales, which is where my heart has always been. I’m most proud of accepting the challenge to join the United States Marine Corps at 18. This showed me what I was truly capable of as a man and how a few seconds of insane courage allowed me to accomplish the challenges I faced. Earning my EGA (Eagle, Globe, & Anchor) solidified my NEVER QUIT mentality and set the tone for the rest of my life. It was not easy. As a matter of fact, I wanted to give up until I realized that people were counting on me to finish bootcamp. I overcame those challenges by remembering what my drill instructor told me, that there were only two ways off Parris Island, by graduating or in a body bag. So I learned to embrace what lied ahead of me and drive on. Along the way, a lot of the things that my mom, elder family members and coaches said to me that I listened to but never applied, came rushing back to me when I needed them most. The coaching and development that I received as a young man and the lifestyles that I was exposed to growing up in Miami and South Georgia taught me how to hustle, how to think quickly, adjust on the fly, find a way out of trouble, take risks, learn from bad decisions and failures, try and try again. and be selfish only when learning because no one can take away the knowledge you gain. All these philosophies, traits, and nuggets have shaped my life and ultimately allowed me to become a creator and the persistent entrepreneur that I am today.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For me and my visiting friends, we are hitting up The Battery to hangout and enjoy the atmosphere. Of course we would book a chef for brunch or go out to eat somewhere that has great appetizers and drinks. Anywhere we go we will have a good time. The most exciting people are the groups you meet randomly and are out enjoying themselves just like you are.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I always honor my spiritual and church roots because that alone is the foundation on which my life stands. Next, my mother. Without her knowing her son and when something is wrong with me, I may not be here today. My uncles for starting their own bbq business, CC’s BBQ, which fed me when I didn’t have a dollar to my name and gave me a dollar when I needed it. My God brother for always encouraging me and for never allowing me to stay down. My ACE for opening his doors to me when I was literally homeless at the time and being attacked from all directions. Lastly, all of the people that directly encouraged me, offered support through all of my entrepreneurial endeavors, and those that listened to me talk about my vision when I really didn’t know how I was going to make it happen. All of you live in my mind allowing me to recall moments that motivated or inspired me not to give up. And a huge thanks to all of the chefs that have joined MobiChef and that will join MobiChef..
