We had the good fortune of connecting with Candace Roddy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Candace, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
The time, energy, and effort that goes into running a small business. I think lot of people don’t understand that you are never off the clock when you own a business. Even if you’re not working on something at the moment your brain is always on and thinking of new ideas or way to make your business better.
With our business we make everything by hand so the time it take is a large factor. Lots of people don’t know that. I was one of them. But now I definitely understand!!!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So far just hit the ground running and just doingmy best. Well I was kinda pushed by my friend. I actually was very scared to start a business but thankfully I had a friend who have a hard time hearing no. She pushed me into trying and so far I’ve been working hard at it since.

It definitely wasn’t easy. I think the hardest part is to just keep going some days are better than others. Lots of time we go without making a single sale, and then I start to question am I good enough, do people even like my products, but I feel to just give up and quit would be worse. Ive worked so hard and came so far it wouldn’t make since to quit now!!!So we keep at it and keep trying.

Iwhat I have learned is to trust myself and be confident. I’m usually a shy nervous person but I feel that having a small business have help me to find my confidence and be okay with being me!!!

I want everyone to know that Yiayiah is made with the intention of encouraging self care. I think I didn’t realize how much until we started this business. It’s very important to make time for yourself to check in on mental, emotional, and physical health. Our products are to help with that!!!! Just to take a small moment to take care of you!!!

Just know if you’re scared to try something or have an idea don’t wait. Just give it a try!!!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to eat at the flying biscuit or pancake social for breakfast.

Lunch either at somewhere in ponce city market they have so many different restaurants that are amazing I can’t pick one!!!

The I love to thrift for records and clothing so visit one of the many thrift shops.
And I love art! So visit the high museum or the puppet museum.
And the vortex for dinner. I love their wings!!!

I also like to see a show at lest once a year at the fox and I love plants so a botanical garden is also right up my alley

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this to my husband Tim for supporting me, my bestfriend and business partner Shonda for encouraging me to try something new and just go for it and all my family and friends who showed our small business support!!!
