We had the good fortune of connecting with Calencia Perry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Calencia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting a business came from a place that was missing in my career. I always thought I would climb the corporate ladder and become an executive but when I kept running into the same roadblocks, I noticed that I had to make my own way. Honestly, I have never worked for a company that truly valued my potential. I worked for some amazing companies but there was no true value for me or investment in my future.
I was tired of not seeing any people of color being represented in the corporations I worked with. I felt underrepresented, unheard, and underpaid. I decided to redirect that energy and put that same value I was missing into my own brand, Be Gold Love.
With my own company, I have the opportunity to fully be me. My voice and ideas. That’s freedom.
What should our readers know about your business?
Be Gold Love is a Lifestyle Jewelry & Self Care Accessories Brand that focuses on embracing each and everyday with the enrichment of your spirit, health, and love.
But I also want the world to know that BGl is more than an accessories brand. It is my creative space.
Be Gold Love recently cohosted a Self Love Sunday event in my hometown, Dothan, Al. The initiative behind Self Love Sunday was for Black Women to be heard and seen.
After relocating from Atlanta, GA to Dothan, AL it was hard for me to figure out where I fit in my new home and I wondered if other women of color felt the same. I only knew Dothan as the place where my dad retired and where I went to high school. A friend and I wanted to create a space for those women and found we were not alone.
Self Love Sunday was an opportunity for women of color to come together and just be themselves with an intro yoga class and some much needed girlfriend talk about business, career, and living in a city where you may not feel seen and heard.
My goal is to continually source and curate jewelry and self care products with a purpose. Through my BGL platform, I would like to continue to focus on events that cater to and support people of color in my area.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I never realized how much I missed Atlanta until I moved. Prior to moving, I lived in Sandy Springs and I worked downtown. I absolutely loved being downtown. I’m a foodie so there was so much to choose from. For food, we would have to hit up Fish Bowl Poke. It’s the best! I will not eat poke from any other place.
For hang out, I’m chill and laid back these days so you will definitely find me at Harold’s for the music and wings lol.
I would hope there is an Atlanta Indie Market going on that weekend because I would surely want my friend to experience it. It’s a moment! Great shopping, people, and just a vibe.
Last but not least a visit to the Beltline is mandatory. I always found myself finding some new intriguing jems on bike rides.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am beyond thankful for God. Everyday I am in awe by his glory and grace. He blessed me with my son, William Wes, who challenges me everyday to be a better me. My daily goal is to create a life for us that he will be proud of.
My support system, I am so blessed to have you all. I definitely want to thank my mother, father, sister, brother and close family. Thank you for being there.
To anyone who has purchased or shared a post, I truly appreciate you. Thank you for supporting my dreams.
Thank you Destiny for listening to the vision and helping me execute Self Love Sunday.
There are countless amazing women I follow or have encountered thank you for sharing your journey. You may not have known this but you inspired me.
