We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Lumpkin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandon, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
– There is now a significant amount of time and effort I have to put in as a business owner, DJ, husband, father, all while still working a 9-5. Often times when I get off of work or on weekends, I’m finding myself helping to run my kids to their extracurricular activities, squeeze a date in, or am on the phone and/or zoom meetings and consults about upcoming gigs. The time and preparation it takes to prepare myself for a 4-6hr wedding, party or event, is as equivalent to shopping & preparing for Christmas ….you start weeks in advance. When I’m preparing a playlist for a client, that takes a significant amount of time cutting songs, making markings on tracks for stops and starts, and transitioning Finding a healthy life and work balance was difficult at the beginning with doing all the aforementioned activities. However writing things down and getting them out of my head, utilizing my calendar with active reminders, and knowing that everything doesn’t have to be done in one day has given me the freedom to have a healthy work-life balance.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others I believe is my level of care. I take the time to do consultations with my clients to really get to know them and the event. I want to know if there are any crowd favorites, grandma or auntie select boogie songs, or Unc and granddaddy 2 stepping songs to get everyone on the dance floor. Are there any special moments you want to include in your event, special announcements, or points of special attention that need to happen….I’m your guy for that too. I like to help curate an experience for my clients not just play music…I’m no jukebox.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend was coming into town, we would hit up a bar and get some brews and wings as soon as they touch down!
If it’s basketball season, we would go to a Hawks game, if football season we would hit up a Falcons game.
For brunch we would go to Forks and Flavors in Kennesaw on Saturday and sample a few of their Black Owned Liquors and mixed drinks, Saturday night probably hang out at The Battery.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to take the time to recognize Theta Phi Sigma Christian Sorority INC. for taking the chance on me and hiring me for my first big gig since establishing my business. While I’ve rocked out parties and crowds before, this was my first show since becoming a business man. I thank you!!
