We had the good fortune of connecting with Antion Scales and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Antion, how do you think about risk?
I’m a firm believer and advocate for taking the necessary risk for your dreams and aspirations. There are risk in every aspect of everyday life why would someone not take the proper risk to help them accel to success? Greatness or success does not come without taking the necessary chances. Risk taking plays a major role in the advancement of my career; From state to state drives just to establish new networks, to stepping out my comfort zone to make new material, to quitting my job to make more time for music. The belief in myself and my abilities has always overruled any doubt that came with taking these risk. Some people put more faith into apps, internet, and other people than they do into themselves. I don’t subscribe to that notion. I believe if you can think it, you can do it. As cliche as it may sound, I have witnessed and personally seen ideas come to fruition with just a little belief, followed by a lot of work put in behind it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My music is authentic and resonates to those who are grinding to get to their goals. My music activates the hustler and ambition in those who listen to it. Those who know where they want to be in life but don’t necessarily know how to get there just yet my music hits for those people. What separates me is for the listener to find out. I can tell you my music is different for a multitude of reasons but I would not be doing myself a service. In this age people are quick to follow and interpret their own views about music. There are various levels to the music quality and content nowadays, I find it more appealing to let the listeners categorize my music on their own rather than me telling them why it’s different. The challenges of me getting to this point were definitely not easy. Personally I work better and thrive under pressure. Whenever the going got tough it felt as if I was on autopilot getting through the difficult times. Meaning “handling business” didnt feel like “business” at the times. It just seemed like stuff that needed to be done. In retrospect I feel like I’ve adopted that “autopilot” mindstate until I reach all the goals I have outlined for myself. In the environment I was brought up in it would’ve been easy to sell drugs, or rob people or any other negative circumstance that provided a fast temporary “come up”. Instead I chose the long route to success, which was believing in my abilities and my talents with music. That right there is the message to my brand and music. That is what people hear and see when they listen to my music. That is the type of listeners my music attracts, those who have access to the easy route but chose to stay grounded and take the long way for their dreams and talents.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would have to check out Calypso Mama for the food they have some of the best “Peppa Shrimp” I have ever tasted. Secondly of course I would have to bring them to the studio and show them the vibes and create some new music.
Also Greensboro, Nc has a bunch of dope parks and museums that we would have to check out
I also enjoy playing basketball or some form of sports activity. Paintball, bowling etc.
We would have to grill out on the grill, Nothing like good vibes, food, drinks, music, and friends on a nice day.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Firstly I want to shout out myself for believing in me and having the foresight to know where my talents will take me. I believe we should normalize giving ourselves credit as well. Secondly I want to shed light on my good friend and phenomenal artist Dane Liem. He was the first person outside of myself to believe in my abilities and goals as if they were his own. He introduced me to his home studio that he created and let me record free of charge just because he believed in me. As artist, as people we don’t truly understand the value of someone else believing in us until we achieve some of the goals and aspirations we lay out for ourselves. Having accomplished many things and so much more to go I can truly say how thankful I am of Dane liem’s belief in me and how that little belief has transformed into a career for me.
