We had the good fortune of connecting with Ali Jamal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ali, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
Someone who has helped to create an enterprise that has provided thousands of jobs to people, utilized the enterprise to provide affordable housing to those most in need, and put back a large portion of its revenue into local communities. With respect to individual development, I want to leave a legacy that has helped others reach their full potential during the implementation of continuous improvement.
What should our readers know about your business?
SGH is an organization focused on affordable housing for individuals with low/no-income. We’ve acquire dilapidated assets that no one wants and convert them to extended stay hotels, preventing thousands of people from entering the cycle of poverty and homelessness after being evicted only one time. What started in 2011 as one run down and shutdown hotel, has grown into a portfolio of ten locations, 1200 units and over 120 employees across the United States. Per night, we house over 2,500 low/no-income individuals and give them an opportunity to get back on their feet and find a permanent housing solution. Twenty percent of our employees have also been one-time guests at our hotels. We take pride in giving our guests the chance for upward mobility as employees of the organization.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to Abbas, Sadru, and Pierre Ismail, – who started the concept of our affordable brand in London, U.K., and provided the seed funding for SGH in Atlanta. We are where we are thanks to their undaunting faith in me.
