We had the good fortune of connecting with Givini Vega and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Givini, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
It has definitely fluctuated over time. I can be quite the workaholic finding myself putting my work before everything else. Once COVID-19 hit our area, I was eventually forced to temporarily close my business. Sitting at home versus working certainly took a toll on me. Ironically, I was hoping to set some time off to simply have time to organize my home , spend time with my husband and relax. This is no where near how I envisioned granting myself time away from work but beggars can’t be choosers. Having nearly three months of free time allowed me to rediscover activities I always enjoyed. I found myself not truly stressed about finances. Jehovah never allowed me to go hungry or be homeless. I applied that same thought to returning to work. The only way working is worth it is if I’m able to also enjoy myself and my family. The free time allowed me to reevaluate the value of my time and mental health. With only a few weeks into reopening, I have put forth an effort to stay loyal to my schedule and to learn to say no. I know that this will be a constant balancing act but I am hopeful that this world wide situation will help keep what’s most important in perspective.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The first thing that comes to mind about Curltured Studio is the professionalism and education. My guests always rave about getting answers for questions they’ve always had while feeling validated and heard. Sadly, many businesses lack the professionalism necessary to retain clientele despite their talent. I can proudly say that our guests get the best of both worlds. It was not easy to get where I am today business-wise due to personal doubt. I’ve always known I’ve been a great employee but I never had any experience being independent in that regard. Lots of prayer and wine helped me move into the next chapter but having great partner and friends as a sounding board didn’t hurt either. I learned who to ask for guidance and when to trust my own intuition. I am stronger and more resilient than I give myself credit for. I am excited to continue providing a loving and relaxing environment for my guests despite the mayhem in the world. In the future, I foresee teaching other eager professionals and growing the team. There will also be an expansion to the brand to include a variety of retail and at home care. The world should know that as trivial as the beauty industry may seem, I witness physical and emotional transformations every day. Relaxation and self-care are highly encouraged. Curltured Studio is more than hair. It’s a lifestyle.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
My best friend and I definitely foodies. We would have to definitely start our day with a yummy vanilla latte with an egg bun from Beans and Butter for breakfast. Lunch would include a stop at Natural Defense for a refreshing, healthy smoothie and dessert at Sweet Joy for decadent infused ice cream. We would have to spend happy hour at Zapata Tacos and Tequila Bar for their bomb hibiscus or tamarind infused margaritas. We would have to hang out in Little 5 Points to enjoy the local art and to pick up new music from Moods Music. If it were music festival season, we would have tickets for the One Music Festival. The vibes, music, food and people are always a good time. We could also catch an art show at Peter Street Station or Future Dead Artists Gallery. To have a chill day, we could enjoy a spa day Mona Venus Med Spa or go for a hike in one of the many parks in our area.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to recognize and give credit to my husband Joel. He’s been the main one to help me make my dreams into a reality despite my apprehension. While I am an over thinker, he is impulsive but we all should have one person that says, “Just do it and see what happens. At least you’ll know once you try.” He’s been my business partner, coach, cheerleader, therapist and partner. He works hard to help us achieve even if he isn’t the priority. As cliche as it sounds, I wouldn’t be where I am now without him.
