Meet Micah Goguen: Artist/Art Instructor/Art Therapist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Micah Goguen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Micah, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
One thing that outsiders may not be aware of is the amount of information an individual can learn about themselves and the way they live their lives through the art process. It is a process that often times leads to a product. How we approach these situations and the choices we make can say and mean a lot. Specifically, the art I enjoy teaching is relationship based. Group classes can help an individual have insight on how different people can approach the same task and get a different result. It offers awareness on how we can do things differently.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One of the biggest challenges about getting my career to this point has been staying true to myself. I think that in order for me to be authentic, I have had to take the time and experiences needed to grow and develop personally. I am constantly adapting and changing the way I do things while working toward my main goal. I feel like this lends itself to more work/life balance. I can actually bring the ways I am learning and growing into my work space and share with my students. Having my own schedule allows me to take the time I need in order to rest or to follow a new path.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love Zoo Atlanta. Having done their annual Art Gone Wild Event each year, I love being able to take visitors and guests there. My favorite time is to get there right when it opens and visit The Living Treehouse. Eating at R Thomas is always a must and their all access hours make it easy no matter what. Hiking in Stone Mountain Park is a treat. I love seeing the Old houses in the historic village and learning about the history. The park itself is beautiful and expansive with lots of trails. Cycling the Silver Comet Trails is something I love to introduce people to when they visit. The comfort and ease of open cycling without the worries of traffic is great. The Center for Puppetry Arts is a great visit to feed the nostalgia of your inner child. Everything from learning more about the craft to seeing some of my favorite childhood puppets from Jim Henson make it worthwhile. A ferris wheel ride at night is a great way to cap it all off. You can see the city for miles and it is a little piece of carnival right in the middle of the city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to Shoutout to all of those that allowed themselves to participate in any of the programming and experiences I have offered. I have definitely learned by way of experience and many of the greatest ideas and insights came from students and their breakthroughs and successes. I wouldn’t have developed to the point I am without their involvement.
