Meet Gabrielle Scott: Performance Artist & Teaching Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabrielle Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gabrielle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
That is was time to root myself here and make it legit. I had already started my own business in my home country Trinidad & Tobago. I have always been an artist who prefers to make her own art and serve others through leadership. I knew I would’ve eventually done it here, I just didn’t think I would do it so soon after graduating. However, with the Covid 19 pandemic where the jobs of performing artist were so easily snatched from us, it was apparent that there is literally no time like the present.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art has always been shaped by the current social and political climate and my own inner struggles. It has never existed in a vacuum. My art is meant to speak loudly and profoundly and is always Divinely inspired. I never make art just to make art. It comes out of a need to speak. A need to provoke, inspire and manifest a new reality. Since I was a teenager I was always led to lead people through their deepest darkness and find light through art. That’s the point of the work. To work towards the light at the end of the tunnel, while discovering your own God given light. Of course there are challenges along the way, but that’s where faith comes in and the reassurance that the work is bigger than me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, pre-Covid, this is what my itineray would consist of (not in order)
1) a trip to the theatre, whether it be Broadway or off-Broadway
2) Blue Note Jazz Club
3) Lunático live music restaurant
4) Brooklyn Museum & Brooklyn Botanical Gardens
5) Secret Garden Juice Bar & Tea House
6) Breakneck Ridge Hiking Trail
7) Harlem – Lolo’s Seafood Shack or Amy Ruth’s, followed by the Apollo Theatre
Just to name a few!!!!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Telly Channel definitely deserves a shoutout. They are an instagram based production company that produces professional content with no outside funding, featuring a range of voices of young New York artists. I truly believe what they produce is only the beginning. They offer short documentaries series to intriguing fictional narratives, always employing new faces.
