We had the good fortune of connecting with Adairius Curry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adairius, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I own a self-defense business. I came up with the idea for this business because I had a small child at the time and my worst fear was something happening to my child and me not being able to protect her. My vision for this company emerged because the cases of human trafficking were starting to rise and become more noticed, and I wanted to start a business that would mean something….help someone…make a difference! I wanted a company that would provide consumers with a better chance to protect themselves and their families, and to just make them feel safer! I began selling self-defense products, but I then decided to add self-defense classes because there are so many small protective tactics that can be learned in cases where self-defense is needed without having to study years of martial arts. I actually have a black belt in Karate, but not everyone wants to or should have to go through years of these classes in order to protect themselves or their loved ones in the unfortunate case of an attack.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In addition to my Self-Defense business, I have a career as an Information Technology Analyst for the Federal Government. I got to this point by starting off as a Help Desk Analyst for a Government Contractor right out of college (at the age of 19). I took a small break from IT and started a position in Human Resources, but I missed IT and decided to return via another position as a Help Desk Analyst with another Government Contractor. I worked in this position for seven years while also performing as a Metrics Analyst and eventually became a Federal Government Employee. I have used my position to climb the ladder to become an IT Analyst, in which I have the opportunity to work with software development, metrics analysis, project management, process management and technical documentation. It was not an easy journey, but I overcame the challenges by continuing to press forward! I also had to learn to be patient. There were a couple of times when I wanted to give up and do something else because I felt that I would never have any forward movement, but my patience paid off! I learned to be patient, to stay humble and to maintain a balance of professionalism and good work ethic. I also learned how to maintain organization and sanity in a fast-paced environment, which led to me being able to be successful at maintaining a work-life-entrepreneurial balance!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I currently live in Spotsylvania, VA. If my best friend was visiting the area and I wanted to show them a great time (without venturing to nearby Richmond, VA or Washington, DC), I would first take them to a few of the local wineries, including the Mattaponi Winery and the Lake Anna Winery. While at Lake Anna, we could also visit the Lake Anna State Park for some hiking, fishing and picnicking! I would also take them for some fun activities, including kayaking, rock climbing and zip-lining. I would also take them to visit the Rush Hour Escape Room at the Spotsylvania Towne Centre. On a less adventurous but more cultural note, I would take them to visit the John J. Wright Museum and Cultural Center to learn about African American history within the county. For eating and drinking, I would take them to my favorite place, Fish & Grill, or to Orleans Bistro & Grill, a New-Orleans themed restaurant with awesome karaoke nights! I’m a pretty simple person, so in my view, some of the most fun and exciting places to check out are places where there are a variety of activities to participate in, that range from relaxing to fun and adventurous!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my daughter. She is the entire reason why I started my business. She has been my motivation for becoming an entrepreneur and for becoming a better person, so I owe everything to her!
