We had the good fortune of connecting with Simone Elliott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Simone, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking

Taking risks has gotten me to where I am today in my career and my life.

When I graduated from South Carolina State University in 2011 with a degree in Marketing, the economy was still recovering from the Great Recession. So, finding an entry level job in Marketing was nearly impossible. I took a management job in retail to earn some money while I was searching for the right opportunity to jumpstart my career.

My boyfriend at the time (now husband) got a job opportunity in New York City and casually mentioned me moving with him. I had no family or friends there, but I truly had nothing to lose and everything to gain (a career). So, I decided to visit him for a week to try and find a job in Marketing before making the move. I managed to squeeze in a few interviews before I had to go back home to Atlanta. The day after I got home, I got a phone call about a paid Marketing internship I interviewed for – they wanted me to start in 2 weeks! I put in my notice at work, packed my bags, and left! This was the best decision I have ever made. It was risky because the opportunity was only for 6 months and the pay wasn’t great, but I did it anyway. Looking back, I can’t believe I did that.

A few months went by at the internship and I decided it was time to start looking for a real job in Marketing since my internship was ending soon. After countless interviews I landed my first full-time job! I was there for 2 years before we decided it was time to leave NYC because the cost of living was just too high and we were getting homesick. So, we took another risk and left NYC with no jobs! Moved back to Atlanta full of hope.

It took about 2 months for me to find my next job, but I was amazed at how many interviews I was now able to get in my field. My career was truly blossoming before my eyes.

I am now 9 years into my Marketing career and am working from home at a leading Marketing agency making 6 figures all because of the strategic risks I took which started by moving to NYC. Looking back, I cannot believe some of the risks I took but I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.

But wait, there’s more – I am now jumping into entrepreneurship which is also risky. My new business, Tiny Mermaids, will be launching this Summer! Tiny Mermaids will provide premium, unique swimwear for infant and toddler girls!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I work for one of the leading marketing/advertising agencies in the country. My clients are some of the most popular, visible brands on the market. I help these brands with their digital marketing efforts. I can’t say much more about my day job but I can speak a bit more about my new business, Tiny Mermaids! We have the cutest, QUALITY swimwear and accessories for infant and toddler girls (newborn-4T). Emphasis on the quality because that is very important to me. Our (virtual) doors will be opening in the next few weeks and I couldn’t be more excited!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, I am a new mom to a 7 month old (plus the pandemic), so I feel like I haven’t been able to really do much for a while besides dates with my husband. BUT I love to eat good food at a place with a nice ambiance. So, I would definitely take my bestie to a few restaurants I love: Poor Calvin’s, Kaiser’s Chophouse, IL Localino, 5Church, Kevin Rathburn Steakhouse, and brunch at black-owned Ms. Icey’s Kitchen! I also grew up walking up Stone Mountain, so I would have to take my bestie there as well. We could also visit my favorite spa, Natural Body Spa Buckhead, for massages! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to shoutout my husband. His love and support has truly helped me get to where I am today. From the very beginning he has been there to support me fully and I could not have done it without him! My 7 month old daughter, Aniyah also deserves a shoutout because she is my motivation. She keeps me going! Lastly, I have to shoutout my mom. She raised me to be the woman I am today and I am forever grateful for the love she has given me.
