Meet Precious Onukwuli: Freelancer Photographer, Creative Director, & Content Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Precious Onukwuli and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Precious, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Since very young, back when I was about 9 or 10 years old, I’ve always identified myself as a creative. Whether I was having the drawing contests with my siblings or the token “drawer” for in class grade school assignments, I often found myself places in the role of the artist.

That trend continued to follow me into high school and college as well. The medium of my art did change as so grew. And I soon, found my passion for photography & videography when I entered the four year Video Broadcasting course in my high school. From the moment I picked up a camera I knew I had found my calling.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe my art stems from the active imagination I had as a child. I would always find myself not just listening to music but visualizing the song into set scenes, location, places, & people.

The journey to finding my way to this career path was not easy in the slightest. As a first generation Nigerian American my future career goals had seemingly already been chosen for me. I was to be a doctor, nurse, or some high paying & stable career path. So attempting to play the role of the obedient child I entered college majoring in Biology… only to change to a business Business major… and then a Marketing major… and finally, after failing miserably at all other subjects, a Journalism.

I had finally mustered up the courage to tell my parents it only made sense to do, not only what I excelled at scholastically, but also what I truly loved with all my being. It wasn’t easy, but I knew I’d live with regret if I didn’t take a chance and follow my path.

Throughout my tumultuous journey the one thing that became painfully obvious was that God had called me to share this gift I had received with the world. I had to learn the hard way, that no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t get away from what I’d been called to do.

Now as a graduate I am undertaking a new journey as I find my place within the industry. Again, I know the path won’t be easy but I’m truly optimistic that I will continue to grow and create art that I had only dreamed of creating in my youth.

I am currently working on growing start up my business, Urbane Agency. I am bolstering my portfolio and client list with local models, artists and small businesses within the Metro Atlanta area. I hope to create & curate artwork that speaks for itself & can stand the test of time.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend was visiting Atlanta for the first time I would of course take them to the usually touristy locations such as the Coca Cola Factory & Aquarium. However, I’d want to show them my favorite hang out spots such as Ponce City Market, Skate Park, Edgewood Avenue, Boogalou, Jenni’s Icecream, and my favorites Vietnamese spot Dua! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to shoutout my high school teacher and mentor Shana Sanders for introducing me to my passion for photography.
