We had the good fortune of connecting with Demaia Coleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Demaia, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
One piece of conventional advice I disagree with is that you don’t need anybody and can do it on your own. I feel that you are capable of achieving anything you put your mind to, but there is a reality that you need others and building the false narrative in people’s minds that you don’t need anyone but yourself is wrong. Whether they’re vendors, printers, or even the mail-workers, you need others to successfully run your business. If you keep that in mind, you’ll always move correctly because you need others, which doesn’t make you weak or any less of a business owner. In fact, it makes you stronger because you’re able to seek help when you need it and outsource for efficacies.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Deecoded Cosmetics is a luxury cosmetics line that encourages our #CodedCrew to walk around like they are that one because they are. We provide a variety of products for those who look for sleek, professional, and trendy cosmetics that can be staples for work, school, date night, brunch, etc. With there being such a wide variety of cosmetics lines out there, I wanted to make a line that had products for where I am in my life: growing up and looking for a more lux feel with the things I use.
I’m most proud of just starting, honestly. People often say what they want or are going to do, but rarely put in the work to ensure that it happens. I used to be the person that would simply give up if something was hard or wasn’t yielding the results I wanted when I wanted, but Deecoded has honestly changed me. I’m proud of the fact that I started and while I’ve been rebranding and working on new things to really get Deecoded to the next level, I’m loving the journey and I’m excited to see how it continues to grow and expand. The journey itself hasn’t been easy, but it’s been well worth it. I’ve rebranded and I’m currently in the process of revamping things to really fit the feel and aesthetic I want for the brand. Despite that, I’m really trying to maintain tunnel vision and focus on what I want Deecoded to say and mean to people because I know what it means to me. I want Deecoded to be a vessel of confidence for people. An experience of luxury and the finer things because that feeling is indescribable. Focusing on what you want and your path alone makes the harder days easier to get through. I’ve learned so much about cosmetics, social media, branding, and even myself. I’ve learned the things I don’t want. I’ve learned how to fix problems as they arise and address them without always throwing my feelings into it (even though it can be difficult at times). I’ve learned how to ultimately figure it out.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being from Detroit, people often feel there is nothing to do or that it isn’t a travel-worthy location– but I feel the complete opposite. Detroit and surrounding areas have so much to offer and I’m always finding new things to do here.
We’d have to start our day with brunch because mimosas are a must. I’d take my girl to Parc, Hudson Cafe, or Delmar Detroit. If we were heading to metro-Detroit, I’d probably say the Rochester Brunch House or 220 Merrill.
Then, we’d have to go shopping and I love going downtown Detroit for all of the small businesses, especially in Parker’s Alley.
Metro-Detroit, I’d have to take my girl to Somerset. It’s a staple.
We’d definitely plan to visit some of the stuff downtown like the Riverwalk, QLine, and museum visits like the DIA and Motown Museum.
Because City Girls like to have fun in the city, I’d definitely have us take a ride on the Handle Bar (peddle-bar)downtown. Dinner, we could visit Joe Muer or the Highlands, both downtown. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are always others who support you and make you feel like you can do anything and within my story, one person that deserves her flowers is my grandmother. She’s literally my bestie, but the encouragement and support she gives me are amazing. Being older, she doesn’t always understand the things that I’m working on or doing, but she consistently tells me to put God first and take the step. Without her, I wouldn’t have started my business, went back to school, and so many other things. To some people, it may seem like that’s what a grandparent is supposed to do, but her simply being there is what means the world to me and helps me through the harder days.
