We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Chinchilla and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chris, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
One thing that I think people outside of my industry are aware of is how much science goes into photography. Yeah creativity is a large part of it, but there’s just so many skills to have and calculations that you have to make at the same time. You have to be able to predict where the sun’s going to be, which way the shadows will grow, how fast your subject will move, exactly how much light you’ll have to work with, how warm should the photo be, what’s the best focal length to have, etc… all while maintaining your composure and planning your poses as you use your creativity to make the photos uniquely yours. It’s something that not many people think about but a lot of times photoshoots are like puzzles that you piece together in your head.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a professional wedding photographer who is in love with what they do. I definitely feel like what that really sets me apart from other photographers is my love for authenticity. I love to capture things in their natural states, whether that be couples, events, or worship because I feel like my favorite photos are often found to be a good mix of authenticity and creativity. Being a photography is a difficult balance, between balancing inconsistency of work, staring at a screen endlessly, maintaining a healthy work/life balance it can feel like a lot, but nothing comes close to the joy I get from capturing stories, so I guess thats what best represents my brand of photos. Joy. The joy of moments
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So a disclaimer from me, I’m a huge fan of coffee, so instantly I would say they need to visit either Chrome Yellow Coffee or Con Leche coffee shop. Both places have very unique and comforting atmospheres with the best coffee in the city, that make it the perfect environment to relax and be productive. After that, I would probably say visit Jeni’s Ice Cream and Upbeet for food and desert. Throughout the day, I would recommend visiting Ponce City Market, taking a stroll on the Beltline or along the Krog Street murals, and then catching the sunset at Piedmont Park or Jackson Street Bridge. And if you’re in town for the weekend, I would say on Sunday check out Passion City Church or Grace Midtown to encounter some awesome creatives with an authentic love for Jesus and heart for their city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely, I could heap praise on people all day, but two people that probably have had the biggest impact on my photo career are my best friend Brian & my mentor/best friend Luke. Brian who taught me how to use a camera when all I had was my simple point & shoot camera and a desire to be good with it. Luke also definitely deserves a shoutout, for teaching me so much of the practicalities behind a photography business & the beauty in capturing couples and being able to bring their personalities into the photos!
