We had the good fortune of connecting with Najj Andrea and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Najj, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I decided to pursue an artistic career because music has always been the one thing that kept me going. I have been singing since I was 6 but professionally since I was 16. Like a lot of people I started singing in the church. Music has always been an outlet for me and when everything felt like it was going wrong and like it was falling apart music and my voice saved me. It’s always been easier for me to express myself and the way I feel through lyrics and melodies. I feel like my music are the words that people wish they could say and the feelings they wish they could express and I want to be able to bring that out of people with my music.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a singer/songwriter and performing artist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The music I write expresses either my true emotions, others emotions, or the emotions I think people tend to hide. When I write or record I always try to put myself in the shoes of the person/people in the song. It brings that raw emotion into the song and draws the listener in to where they actually listen and feel a connection to you and the lyrics. Through my childhood, I always felt like an outcast and misunderstood and music was my outlet and my escape from everything. When I first entered the industry it was a struggle trying to get people to pay attention to me. People doubted that I could sing, people doubted that I could perform, and people doubted that I would lasts. I released my first song when I was 15 and from then I have been writing and releasing music on all platforms. It has not been easy and continues to be hard. As a young woman in the music industry, I’m constantly having to prove that I am able to bring something new, something interesting, and something worth looking at to the table. This is a tough industry and they want you to talk, walk, and act a certain way but I just continue to stay true to who I am and what I know I am comfortable with. Due to the pandemic, I have not been able to perform or be in the studio like before, but I have been using this time to re-brand, work on music, and bettering myself as an artist.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to first thank the band. Marv Stixx- drummist Bass Ric – bassist Owen – pianist I want to thank my producer who mixes and masters all my music Jamore – Engineer, Producer I want to thank my family, friends, the listeners, and all my supporters because I could not have done any of this without them . They are the ones I think about, that keep me going, and push me to be the best when I feel like giving up.
