We had the good fortune of connecting with Angely Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angely, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson my business/ career has taught me is to set boundaries between you and the outside world. As an example, I only answer business emails Monday-Friday. Sundays are personal time off for myself and to go to museums. It’s important to take days off so you don’t burn out, which has happened to me in the past.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art consist of creating conceptual fine jewels inspired by the beauties of nature and the world of fantasy. Combining these two worlds continues to challenge me and push my work forward. Despite the many obstacles and the continued struggles, I feel my feelings but I still keep going. It’s what I love to do and when you love it so much, the universe just works itself out. I’ve learned to take everything one day at a time and, of course, build my boundaries.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of the most interesting places for me to visit are the MET Museum and the Museum of Natural History. These places are not just for fun for me but also where I get a lot of inspiration in the city. There’s so much history in these spaces, and that helps inform my work. So it’s beneficial to my personal life and my career.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout-out Karen Smith from We Wield The Hammer for educating the next generation of female black jewelers. She’s truly inspiring and education is key in bringing new talent into the jewelry industry.
