We had the good fortune of connecting with Elayne Fluker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elayne, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I’ve learned over time that an important part of my success — personally and professionally — is support. Asking for it, accepting it, and knowing that I deserve it. The right support can completely change your life, even if it comes in the form of small acts of kindness. This is why I am so passionate about reminding ambitious women that having it all doesn’t mean doing it all alone and that they deserve support.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
For many of us unapologetically ambitious women today—women who are encouraged at every turn to declare ourselves as “badasses” just to prove how strong, competent, “flawless,” and fearless we are—there is a dangerous belief about support often present, and it manifests as what I call, “I Got It!” Syndrome. We have these self-inflicted expectations to “have it all,” and keep it all together, all the time, all by ourselves. And the idea of allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, open, soft, and human is often terrifying because we imagine it will make us appear weak. As a result, we wear the mask, walk alone, and often carry heavier burdens than we need to. Meanwhile our dreams, our lives, our careers, our relationships, and our health suffer the consequences. I wrote my book, “Get Over ‘I Got It'” to help unapologetically ambitious women remember that support isn’t something to avoid. Support is sexy! And having it all doesn’t mean doing it all alone.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a vegan, finding a restaurant with delicious food (that can also be enjoyed by my non-vegan friends) is always an adventure. So a weeklong stay here in ATL would include stops at some of my personal favorite Black-owned restaurants, such as Local Green Atlanta and Chi Chi Vegan Taco Shop.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To all the unapologetically ambitious women out there!
