Meet Sarah Magowan: Reiki Practitioner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Magowan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Tiny Sparks Healing (TSH) was conceived in the midst of the pandemic in 2020. In March, the pandemic hit and I, along with the rest of the globe, had my world flipped upside down. I was invited to make some major lifestyle changes. I graduated from my undergrad program and in the same week I lost my job as a server. This left me with ample time and space to decompress and reimagine. I found myself doing a lot of reflecting and looking to answer serious questions about my passions, my next steps and the things that bring me joy. Working in the service industry, I had become accustomed to constantly going, going, going- but at the same time, I was waiting for “the perfect time” to explore entrepreneurship. I knew it was always something I wanted to do but 2020 showed me that “the perfect time” doesn’t exist- and that the best time to start is now. Last year gave me the opportunity and courage to be still and truly listen to what my body and spirit were telling me. I knew that I was ready to experience work that was more intentional, meaningful and expansive. And that’s how Tiny Sparks Healing (TSH) was conceived! Reiki serves as an ideal way for me to embrace my natural sense of empathy and my psychic ability in order to connect with people on an energetic level. As of August 2020, I’ve completed level one and two of Beacons of Change’s reiki certification and am currently working toward becoming a reiki master. I birthed this business during a very challenging and informative time, as to fully express myself and abilities. It has allowed me to have fun and spark joy for others. I have the privilege of holding space for clients during discomfort and support their healing journey back in their body. By empowering myself to have the courage to start this business, I get to empower others every day. In that process, work never feels like work, but rather a gift. I am eager to see how it continues to grow and evolve.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a reiki practitioner, I spend most days connecting with others. We meet where they are in the moment and I offer space for support in returning home into their bodies. Reiki is an offering to assist in reducing anxiety, balancing energy, a reduction of pain, and more. In starting this practice during a pandemic, I myself have experienced the need for this work. During a time where emotional support and relaxation has become a necessity, I maintain approachable pricing and for accessibility to all, which I am really proud of. I now offer in-person and remote sessions and clients have really appreciated these offerings. I have a dedicated passion for supporting individuals who have experienced trauma. Having experienced and dealt with my own trauma, I found energy work to be one of my favorite healing modalities in my process. This is what fuels my passion for this work. I have first-hand experience seeing how trauma, anxiety and stress can negatively impact the nervous system, so being able to support others in their healing journey has brought me so much joy. I am currently working on a training in Trauma Sensitive Mindfulness with David Treleaven. It has allowed me to better support my clients who have experienced trauma and continues to deepen my awareness for how to individualize sessions to meet clients’ unique needs. One mantra I live by is from author Glennon Doyle, and it’s “I am a god damn cheetah.” Starting a business in a pandemic, while beginning grad school has been far from easy. There have been moments I wanted to give up, but I always come back to this mantra. I keep reminding myself why I started this… I want more from life. I am grateful and enthusiastic to get to participate in this important work. I want to give back and share the gifts that have been shared with me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hmm… I’m going to write this from the perspective of exploring during Covid. I have found that Covid has created an opportunity to create your own magical environments for fun! Now that we are starting to get a taste of spring, I’d want to hit the different walking and hiking trails around the city! I would take my friend to Sweetwater Creek to do the yellow trail and play in the creek with the dogs. We could then grab take out from my favorite bar that I miss sitting at, the “Wrecking Bar” and watch the sunset at Freedom Park. The next day, we would pack up the bikes and take them to the Silver Comet and do a long ride. Then on the way back we would grab some take out tacos from my favorite authentic taco spot Carniceria Ramirez and head back to the house for a picnic in the yard. After a long ride, massages at my favorite spot Ritual Bodywork in Grant park would be exceptional. Following that we’d take our hammocks over to Grant Park and soak in the sun. Then walk up and explore Oakland Cemetery and head to Krog market. The next day we would head to Arabia Mountain to explore the trail with the dogs. We would hit up Ammazza for pizza on the way back in town. I saved the best for last. The last morning, we would head to Hell Yeah Gluten Free for breakfast and then grab coffee at Victory C.C. After letting the food digest, we would bike “The Path” to Stone Mountain. Life looks a little different in Covid, but I have tried to find ways to safely continue to have fun and go outdoors! These are some of the fun activities I have done throughout the last year. These are crazy times but if we make the best of them, we can still find ways to continue to heal!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My best friend, Dr. Amy King, is a huge source of inspiration and support in cultivating Tiny Sparks Healing. Amy never misses a moment to uplift me up and remind me of all that I am capable of. She is reiki master herself and has been an amazing mentor for me throughout this journey. She is not only an emotional support but has been an invaluable resource of information in starting a new business. Being able to witness her success in founding her practice, Heart Space Holistic, has been beyond inspiring. This is what I remember in the moments when having a new business is overwhelming or scary. She always helps me to remember running a business takes time, love, and courage. So, thank you Amy King for seeing me and my power, even in the moments when I can’t.
