We had the good fortune of connecting with Yona Simons and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yona, what role has risk played in your life or career?
During undergrad, I had the fortunate opportunity to meet a multi millionaire while working as a lifeguard at that Greenville aquatic center. This individual would swim every morning at 5 am. At the end of his daily sessions he would leave me with tips, these tips would vary based on the lesson he wanted to teach me. One particular morning, this man decided to tell me the three constant money makers in life: “ birth, homes, and death”. It was ironic because at the time I was coaching the swim team, teaching lessons and working at a child care center in between classes. Fast forward to post graduation where I obtained my first job as an Assistant Director of a child care center; Masters degree with a B-K licensure; all while taking my mother to chemotherapy every Friday. Subsequently, becoming my mothers caregiver and executive of her estate. Purchasing my first home on my own using the life insurance money my parents left. Life is sometimes the ultimate teacher. Unconsciously, the tip that man left me that morning became the blueprint to my success and my life. Without enduring these things, experiencing different obstacles throughout life, I would not be filled with the knowledge in which it takes to provide the services I do for others.

Once you make the decision to be your own boss, the only way to go is up. This doesn’t mean that you won’t have your fair share of obstacles along the way, cause you will, thousands of them.

With every obstacle comes a new lesson. Success has no timeline. However, with focus and dedication, anything is possible. Be careful how you speak to yourself, never know what’s going to happen.
