Meet DW Medoff | Writer/Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with DW Medoff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DW, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I know to keep going because at one point I decided to start. I found a hobby. It became a passion. Then, I realized I needed to completely pursue this because I could see no other path.
I’ve always loved movies, but after I dipped my toe into writing, I quickly slipped entirely into the ocean.
Writing, directing, producing… I always wanted to be a part of making movies.
Times get tough. Money gets tight. Things get dicey. But, how can I give up what I love now that I’m doing it?
Keep going.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I write and direct horror movies. I started in comedy, but I always had something disturbing fueling the laughs. A stalker coworker obsessed with the company taco Tuesday outing. A retelling of Christmas Carol where Scrooge dies with Tiny Tim. A suicide cult where a single buffoon accidentally survives the ascension.
I had been making dark comedy stuff with friends, but I wanted to push myself. I found my voice in horror.
I didn’t go to film school, so I learned by watching movies and making short films with people who believed in my stories and trusted me to execute.
Atlanta has a great film community. Strangers have become friends who supported me, lifted me up, and elevated my filmmaking. I can’t wait to return the favor to all the people who have been with me on this journey.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A perfect, chill Atlanta day starts at Homegrown, and I’m getting the comfy chicken biscuit. If they’re closed for some reason, Little Tart for some pastries or Ria’s Blue Bird. Then checking out Oakland Cemetery for some Atlanta history. If they’re not a film person, maybe I can get a quick visit to a set or studio. Ending the day with some good bites and drinks at Victory or Muchacho unless we can snag a reservation at BoccaLupo.
Honorable mention: food crawl on Buford Highway.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Blake Studwell (DP and Director extraordinaire)
Stephen Beehler (producer and champion of indie filmmakers and live performers – ran RoleCall and Limelight theaters)
Jonathon Pawlowski + Justin Miles (Cowards LLC, our production company),
Michael Sokol (my first mentor and the first filmmaker to believe in me as a writer/director)
Seth and Sara Michaels (Amazing Producers and friends who saw potential in me and brought me on board to direct their movie)
