Meet Wendy Murphy | Small Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Wendy Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wendy, how does your business help the community?
With my business, I am able to support different missions locally and around the world, that are focused on sharing the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His Salvation (His death, burial, and resurrection).
Since I am not able to personally go to all the places and share the gospel, I am able to raise money and funds through my business and be part of their mission all from my home.
I have been able to support missions in my community Bartow County, but also in other places of the States like Portland, Boston as well as other countries like Mexico, Argentina, Kenya, Albania. By supporting them financially, they are able to reach their communities and share about Jesus and to show them the love and hope that is found in Christ alone.

What should our readers know about your business?
Sew to the Spirit started in a small corner of my house, about 8 years ago with a small sewing machine and has grown in the last year when I officially became an LLC. In my shop I do some sewing to make memory items for my customers like bears and t-shirt blankets as well as other personalized items like printed or embroidery merch for individuals and businesses (hats, t-shirts and more). Each of these items I make, I can say they are made with love and prayers. I enjoy praying for people while making their memory bears, praying for comfort for the family and hoping they will love their items, praying for the small business merch or the school students that will be going to a specific camp, or retreat. It is wonderful to have a tiny part of their lives and their story, through the things I make for them.
My business is an outlet for my craftiness and creativity, it is a way for me to be able to support financially my family without having to leave my home but it is also a way to support gospel-minded missions locally and around the world.
Every single purchase has a percentage destined towards missions through my local church. The name Sew to the Spirit is based on Galatians 6:7-9, that says “…but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting”.
It is the desire of my heart to use the resources that God has given me, to use them all for His glory and for the expansion of His Kingdom.
I am originally from Mexico, and two years ago I was able to raise the funds through my business and my community to become an American citizen. After that great accomplishment, I felt the Lord leading me into becoming an LLC and prayed for open doors. We had been knocking some doors for a while to get business from some organizations and God opened those doors. I am so thankful that these companies and organizations have entrusted us with their business and given us the opportunity to grow professionally.
As a wife and mom of 3 (who also happens to homeschool them) it is hard to balance life, motherhood and work. I learned after being hospitalized a couple of times last year due to DVT and surprise pregnancy, that there are many things I can’t control, like my health. But God is in control, and I can trust Him. Even with my business when things do not go the way I thought or the doors were closed, God knows my heart and the purpose of my business and He will give me what is best for me. I can only do so much but He can do much more.
I want to continue to create and use my business as a channel to share about God with the whole world. I pray my business brings glory to God and blesses others so they can hear, see and experience the love of Christ.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love my community! I live in Adairsville but spend a lot of time in Cartersville and both places have a lot of charm in it. I would take them driving by beautiful fields, walking downtown charming Hallmark-like towns, and visiting many thrift stores is my favorite thing to do with a friend. Next we would get a milkshake at The Jerks of Cartersville is a must to live some vintage creamery experience. Visiting my local farmers market is my favorite thing to do on a Saturday morning of summer and getting to pick fresh strawberries and trying the most delicious strawberry pie or ice cream at The Farm Hidden Creek is a must in a late spring afternoon.
I would take them to small businesses and restaurants like Mangos for some Latino snacks, Depending what area in town I am, Wholly grounds coffee shop or Noble & Main Co. are great spots for a delicious cup of coffee. Finishing the evening sitting by the pond at Manning Mill park in Adairsville would be the perfect way to finish our day.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First of all, I am thankful to God who gave me the tools, training and opportunities that allowed me to build a small business. Thankful for my mom who encouraged me to learn new skills in my youth which I am using now in my shop and my dad for his entrepreneur personality that has been passed down to me. Also thankful for my husband who is my encourager and my business partner. And finally, thankful for everyone who has given me a chance to sew, make or create something for them and entrusted me with their business.
