We had the good fortune of connecting with David New and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
One thing that many people don’t know about the barbering industry is that you don’t learn how to cut hair at MOST barber institutions or schools. They teach you mostly theory and historical cases of barbering. They are meant to make sure that you follow health and safety guidelines so you become licensed. The art of cutting hair is just that, an Art! You must have talent when it comes to this game and it can be learned or trained but having the eye to cut hair is something special. Most people don’t know this. Most of my barbering knowledge has come from in the field experience and studying other barbers. You never stop learning how to cut hair and it is a journey from the day you pick the clippers up until the day you put them down… There is always room for improvement and the best thing you can be as a barber is a student of the game.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I played College Baseball. I was a shortstop and I had my eyes on playing ball at the next level. But right around 2018 I was introduced to entrepreneurship. I had always been an entrepreneur just not realizing it as I had my own landscaping business in my subdivision from the age of 13. I had this business until I was 19 when I really started taking haircutting seriously. So to transition from slaving over lawns for hours, to cutting people’s hair was like I had won the lottery at the time. So back to college… I was a college athlete but I was also on the Dean’s List. Once I got my associates degree I didn’t know what I wanted to do so I just chose a major in international business. After a semester in it I realized it wasn’t for me and I instantly changed my major to Accounting because I thought it would be the most beneficial degree I could get out of the business program. So I did and I graduated with my accounting degree. I had a job before graduation and I worked there for a year until I was offered a higher paying position somewhere else. I lasted at the new job all of two months as we parted ways because it just wasn’t the right fit for me. Ever since, I’ve been self employed. The road has not been easy and many of my youthful mistakes have hindered me from achieving optimal success. But the journey has all been worth it as I now own DNew Clips, LLC. and DNew Enterprises, LLC. One is a mobile uber-like barbering business and the other is my tax preparation firm. I operate them both, but I see a day where I can begin hiring others to work for me. My dreams are big, but if I’m being honest both of these businesses are new, and I am doing everything in my power to make sure I create systems that will make them sufficient. The journey has only begun.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We could literally eat anything, it’s Atlanta come on! But I’d probably take them to The Daquiri Bar on Old National. We’d definitely have to walk up either Kennesaw or Stone Mountain. We would probably sit in Centennial Park and relax. And we could go out at night to East Atlanta and find some poetry jams and eat good food as well.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I started my entrepreneurial journey because I was introduced (like most) to a book called Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Robert Kiyosaki, though criticized for many of his opinions, is the reason I started taking financial literacy seriously. Before reading Rich Dad and the series of books he created, I began to realize that no one around me was focused on financial intelligence. At least not like how Robert expressed it through obtaining financial freedom. So, I have to attribute everything I know about financial intelligence to Robert Kiyosaki. He is the reason I became and stayed an entrepreneur. I have also been influenced by John Hope Bryant and am a member of his Operation HOPE program. It helps wonders!
