We had the good fortune of connecting with Xay George and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Xay, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My goal in founding XRG Nexus was to combine my passion for photography with my degree in marketing from college and provide my services as a freelancer to anyone who needed them. I wanted to be able to eventually work for myself and not have to clock in to someone else’s timesheet. The freedom behind having my own business has been very ideal for me because I am my own boss. I can work with whoever, wherever I want, and whatever time I want to.
What should our readers know about your business?
XRG Nexus is a creative agency offering photography, videography, and digital marketing services such as content creation, social media management, and branding consultation. The business mainly tailors its social media management and content creation services to restaurants, but it is not only subject to restaurants. Choosing XRG Nexus means partnering with a passionate, dedicated professional who understands the unique challenges and opportunities of the digital landscape. Whether you’re looking to boost your business’s social media presence or capture unforgettable moments through photography, XRG Nexus is committed to delivering exceptional results that exceed expectations.
I am most excited about the photography portion of my business because I have such a huge passion for photography, and now I get to build my portfolio up even more while expanding my business at the same time. Despite the fact that I am still far from achieving my goals, I am extremely proud of myself for having taken the risk to become a full-time entrepreneur.
As far as business, I got to where I am today through family, friends, connections, and experiences. Working for and under other people for the last 7 years of my life has also played a huge role in establishing XRG Nexus. I put my two-week notice in for my current job on July 26th, 2024, and my final day working there is this Friday, August 9th. I’ve been wanting to focus on my business for over a year now, but the thought of it has been so scary. I am so glad that I am finally doing it, and I feel as free as ever.
I haven’t experienced much on the business side of things, considering that I haven’t gone full-time yet, but I know there will be many trials and tribulations through this process, and I am prepared to triumph through them all.
Some of the biggest lessons that I have learned so far have been: (1) Connections are key; your “network is your net worth.” (2) Keep track of your earnings and expenses, and try to keep everything legit. (3) Not all money is good money; some clients are not worth working with if the drawbacks of working with them outweigh the benefits and money they are providing. (4) Continue learning about your industry and the business side, as well as keep refining your skills. (5) Do not chase financial monthly goals; doing so will only make you stressed out and drive you to do anything to reach them.
I want the world to know that XRG Nexus is more than just a business; it is a passion-driven venture that is motivated by my favorite thing to do, photography, and the subject I have studied for 5+ years with great diligence, marketing.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m sort of a homebody, so I wouldn’t be able to give them a full week, but I can do about 4-5 days.
Day 1: We would go to Piedmont Park and the Beltline, enjoy the sun, ride scooters, and get food in the Krog Street Marketplace.
Day 2: We could go discover a new restaurant on TikTok that neither of us have tried before.
Day 3: We would go to Twin Peaks in Buckhead and get a few drinks and watch whatever sports event is on that day.
Day 4: We would go to an event such as the Atlanta Streetwear Market and shop for some clothes. We would also spend that day going to Perimeter and Lenox.
Day 5: We are going out with a bang and would hit my favorite club/lounge: Rock Steady.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely want to shout out my family and friends on this journey because they have played such a huge role in helping me start this business. I want to specifically thank my pops for instilling an entrepreneurial spirit in me at such a young age. He not only told me but also showed me that you can be your own boss, no matter what age or stage of life you are in, as long as you have the heart and hustle to make things happen.
My second shoutout goes to Sean Williams, my photography mentor. He is the reason I got into photography three years ago. He has taught me a great deal about photography, and both he and my dad have shown me how to manage the business side.
I also want to give a shoutout to Bhavin Patel for helping me set up XRG Nexus and educating me on essential business necessities while constantly providing great business advice and ideas.
Lastly, I want to honor my late mother, who passed away in 2016. She, along with God, gives me the strength and courage to keep going strong every day. I would be nothing without all the people who have come and gone in my life, and I am forever grateful for each person and situation I have encountered.
