We had the good fortune of connecting with Syerra Donaldson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Syerra, how do you think about risk?
Risk-taking is like adding spices to a dish; it adds flavor and excitement to my life. In my case, I experienced risk in a different way most people do, but I understand its importance. As a chef and mental health therapist, I’ve likely taken calculated risks that have propelled my career forward. Whether it’s experimenting with new recipes or trying innovative therapeutic techniques, embracing risk has likely led to growth and success. At 30, I’ve already achieved a lot, and it’s clear that my willingness to take risks has played a significant role in your journey so far. Keep exploring, experimenting, and pushing boundaries—it’s what keeps life interesting!
Also, Winning a competition on Food Network was an incredible experience and a big RISK! It’s something I’ve dreamed about for so long, and to see all of my hard work and dedication pay off in such a big way is truly humbling. Being able to showcase my culinary skills on national television and come out on top is a moment I’ll never forget. I’m so grateful for the opportunity and excited to see where this win takes me in my culinary career.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey as a catering/private chef & Mental Health therapist has been a rollercoaster of challenges and triumphs. What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to quality and creativity. I thrive on bringing visions to life with food and experiences, drawing inspiration from my Jamaican and Cuban heritage to infuse dishes with bold flavors.
Getting to where I am today hasn’t been easy. It’s been a journey marked by tears, sleepless nights, and countless rejections. But through it all, my determination and judgment have propelled me forward. I’ve learned the hard way that you can’t please everyone, and sometimes, even those closest to you may not understand or support your dreams.
I’ve learned to trust my instincts and keep my plans close to my chest. My experiences, from childhood trauma to identity crises, have shaped me into the resilient individual I am today. Despite the hardships, I’ve found solace and purpose in helping others through food and mental therapy, drawing on my own journey of healing and self-discovery.
My story is a testament to the power of perseverance and faith. Against all odds, I’ve emerged stronger and more determined than ever to make a positive impact on the world. And through it all, I remind myself to keep God first, knowing that with Him, all things are possible.
