We had the good fortune of connecting with Junrong (Arving) Wu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Junrong (Arving), we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
What makes me happy is consistently trying something new. I enjoy the thrill and surprise of experiencing novelty and fresh encounters. Trying new things makes me feel that I am growing and learning. It helps me discover the new angles to my life with unexpected excitements. These fresh experiences can literally be something small. Whether it is just trying different cuisines, discovering a new song I like, or walking down the same street with a different melody in my ears. All these little changes evoke different feelings, adding delight to my everyday life. Perhaps that’s why I enjoy jazz music. The improvisation. Each play is different, with constantly changing ambiance resonating with varied emotions.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am most excited about is the opportunity to pursue my love for design, which I am deeply passionate about, as a hobby and as work. I find a lot of excitement in the challenges from my studies and work, which allow me to stay innovating, push the boundaries of design, explore new techniques, and learn how much more I can do.

As to my artworks, they are always a reflection of my journey and my life. They convey the unique expressions by merging the inspirations from my experience and emotions. At times, I could become thoroughly sentimental and dive into a zone where allows me to magnify and transfer my feelings into my artworks. Drawing inspiration from art, fashion, and photography, I enjoy infusing aesthetic elements from these realms into my creations.

Similarly, for work, I am meticulous and thorough. I’d spend extra time testing around, looking for different techniques to incorporate, and striving to find the best way to communicate the idea in my work.

Under any circumstances, we should never lower our standard of what a good design could be and always ask yourself “why” before making every design decision. This is what I constantly remind myself of and intend to uphold throughout my career and beyond.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would highly recommend the Cabbagetown, one of my favorite spots in Atlanta. It’s an artsy and less touristy neighborhood. It is known for its stunning mural arts, eclectic boutiques and artistic vibe. I get mesmerized by the vibrant murals and graffiti whenever I walk down the streets there. After the street art tour, grabbing some food or drinks at Carroll Street Café would also be great, to enjoy its relaxing ambiance and delicious food. And while just outside the Cabbagetown, a visit to the Oakland Cemetery can be a fascinating experience. It’s a historic cemetery with beautiful mausoleums, sculptures, and the final resting place of notable figures from Atlanta’s past.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a massive shout-out to one of the most amazing professors I have ever met during my studies, Christina Maloney, the motion media design professor from SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design). Her patience with all the students’ questions, attention to detail in teaching, and the energy always make her classes enjoyable. She is always supportive, encouraging us to push ourselves and take on new challenges. I am so grateful to her for introducing me to the captivating world of motion graphics and teaching me so much about it when I was a beginner in motion design. Her support and guidance have been invaluable to me, who is genuinely one of the best professors I’ve ever met, with the greatest pleasure of learning from.
