We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Carolyn Strong and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Carolyn, what do you want your legacy to be?

As I reflect on the legacy I aim to leave behind, it’s deeply rooted in my lifelong dedication to advocacy, education, and equity. I want to be remembered as someone who committed her life, research, and career to illuminating paths for those often left in the shadows of society—especially Black girls. My mission has been to ensure that marginalized groups are not only recognized but celebrated for their unique contributions and potential.

Throughout my career, from my strategic roles in educational institutions to my influence as a national thought leader in diversity, equity, and inclusion, I have consistently strived to create environments where Black girls, and all marginalized individuals, feel seen and valued. I’ve worked diligently to dismantle the barriers that hinder their progress and to develop educational and disciplinary systems that support rather than penalize.

The brand manifesto for my company, Strong Conversations, is “changing the world one conversation at a time,” and I aim to do just that. In every policy I’ve crafted, every program I’ve implemented, and every course I’ve taught, I’ve embedded the principles of fairness and inclusion, aiming to foster a world that recognizes the strength and beauty in diversity. Through my publications, public engagements, and the dialogues sparked by Strong Conversations, I advocate for systemic change and provide a voice to those who might otherwise go unheard.

Ultimately, I want my legacy to be that of a catalyst for change—one who used every tool available to her to fight inequity and inspire a brighter, more inclusive future. I want to be remembered as a defender of the light in every young person I’ve had the privilege to serve, ensuring that no light is dimmed but instead shines brighter because of our collective efforts to nurture and empower.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

Strong Conversations was born from a deep-seated desire to be the change I wanted to see in the world and to be the advocate I wished I had growing up. This brand is more than just a platform; it’s a movement dedicated to amplifying the voices that are too often silenced and creating safe, supportive environments where black girls know they are seen, heard, and valued. In a society where the unique challenges faced by black girls are frequently overlooked, Strong Conversations aims to shine a light on these issues and foster a community where meaningful dialogue leads to real change.

As a passionate advocate for black girls, I founded Strong Conversations with the specific intent to offer guidance, support, and advocacy—a sanctuary where black girls can find a champion in their corner. It’s crucial that they have access to spaces where their experiences are validated and their potential encouraged. Through this work, I strive to dismantle barriers and create pathways that empower these young women to thrive, fully aware of their worth and capabilities. My commitment to this cause is deeply personal, driving every discussion, workshop, and program I develop to ensure that every black girl who engages with Strong Conversations feels empowered to pursue her dreams without restraint.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

If my best friend were visiting Atlanta, I would undoubtedly take them on a historical journey that encapsulates the city’s rich civil rights heritage and vibrant culture. Our first stop would be the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, where we’d explore Dr. King’s birth home, the Ebenezer Baptist Church where he preached, and the moving exhibits at the Visitor Center. From there, we’d head to the Center for Civil and Human Rights, immersing ourselves in interactive exhibits that chronicle the struggle for civil rights in America.

To experience Atlanta’s soulful charm, we’d spend an evening in the historic Sweet Auburn district, indulging in Southern comfort food at Paschal’s Restaurant—a favorite haunt of civil rights leaders. We’d then wander through the vibrant streets, taking in the sights and sounds of this culturally rich neighborhood.

Throughout the week, we’d also make time to sample the city’s eclectic dining scene, from traditional Southern fare at Mary Mac’s Tea Room to innovative global cuisine at Ponce City Market. And of course, we’d toast to our adventures with craft cocktails at trendy rooftop bars like SkyLounge or Estrella.

In essence, our week in Atlanta would be a perfect blend of history, culture, and culinary delights—a true reflection of the city’s diverse and dynamic spirit.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

When asked why I do what I do, my answer always circles back to my family. The unwavering support and understanding from my family and close circle are fundamental to my work as a firebrand for cultural change. They recognize that the impact of what I do extends far beyond personal fulfillment—it’s about making a significant, positive change in the world at large.

My family doesn’t just stand by me; they are an integral part of my journey. They allow me the time, space, and support needed to pursue this mission of being the change I wish to see in the world. This work—dedicated to challenging inequities, advocating for the marginalized, and fostering environments where every individual can thrive—is not a path I could walk alone.

The efforts to integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion into educational systems and workplaces are intensive and demanding. Yet, knowing that my family understands the importance of this work makes the challenging days manageable and the victories sweeter. They share in the belief that our collective efforts can reshape societies to be more just and inclusive.

Ultimately, my motivation is deeply rooted in a vision of the world where future generations, including my own family, will experience a society that values and uplifts all its members. This is the legacy I aim to build and the promise I strive to fulfill, not just as a professional obligation but as a personal commitment to the ones I love and to the broader global community.
