We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamlec David and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamlec, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks has likely played a significant role in my career, by allowing me to push boundaries, explore new creative territories, and grow both personally and professionally.

By stepping out of my comfort zone and deciding to immigrate to Toronto, Canada with the goal of pursuing my dream of becoming a Film Director, I have discovered innovative storytelling techniques, forged valuable connections, and gained recognition for my bold approach.

Embracing risks can lead to breakthroughs, opening doors to exciting opportunities and contributing to my development as a writer and director.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey to where I am today professionally was likely filled with both challenges and triumphs. It’s unlikely that my path was easy, especially considering the competitive nature of the creative industries and the intersection of cultures that I navigate in my storytelling. Overcoming these challenges likely required resilience, determination, and a willingness to learn and adapt.

Some of the lessons that I have learned along my professional journey include the importance of persistence, the value of collaboration and networking, and the need to continually evolve and improve as an artist, as well as the significance of staying true to my unique voice and vision, even in the face of criticism or trends.

I would want to convey the depth and authenticity of my storytelling and to be recognized for my ability to shine a light on the diverse experiences and perspectives within the Black-Latino diaspora, while also highlighting the universal themes that connect us all as human beings. Ultimately, I want my work to inspire empathy, understanding, and appreciation for the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our society.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I have to plan a week-long trip in Toronto, I might have to create an itinerary that balances cultural exploration, culinary delights, and immersive experiences. Starting with brunch in the vibrant Liberty Village area, explore the iconic CN Tower, head to the Distillery District for dinner and follow by exploring the cobblestone streets and enjoy its unique blend of art galleries, boutiques and cafes.

Visit the Art Gallery of Ontario to explore its diverse collection of Canadian and international art. Take a walk through Kensington Market. Picnic lunch in Trinity Bellwoods Park or High Park.

Take a culinary tour of Toronto’s diverse neighbourhoods as well as experience Toronto’s vibrant nightlife scene with drinks and live music.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As someone who values community and collaboration, I choose to dedicate his shoutout to my parents, grandmothers, family and friends who have supported and inspired me along my creative journey. Forever grateful for the collective effort and support that have propelled me forward on my path as a storyteller and filmmaker.
