We had the good fortune of connecting with Mario Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mario, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My perspective on “work-life balance has changed drastically. In fact, I no longer believe in “work-life balance.” I have concluded that struggling to achieve work-life balance is the pathway to more stress, strain, and aggravation. Life happens, and due to the uncertainties, it seems impossible ever to perform or at best maintain an authentic, sustainable work-life balance. We should strive for greater self-awareness and intentional guilt-free integration of self-prioritization.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am the owner and CEO of Life Matters with Mario Brown, LLC. The company is a Total Life and Entrepreneurship Coaching Service, and our anchor program is Personal Mindset Transformation for Success. We offer private, affordable virtual individual coaching sessions: our 3-point faith-based service model is non-judgmental listening, appropriate goal setting, and comprehensive strategies for desired outcomes. With over 30 years of pastoral and itinerant ministry, I realized that people often merely need someone who is not connected to them and outside of their sphere of influence to see their situation from a different perspective to reach solutions that will give them the desired outcome. What makes me excited and proud of the work about the work I do is two-fold. First, I am flowing in the second dimension of purpose for my life. Secondly, I am incredibly fortunate to be gifted to facilitate strategies that are positively helping people overcome years of mental bondage and stagnation. By focusing on the purpose of one’s existence, I help broaden the individual’s scope and depth of thinking, thus expanding their capability to create the life they truly desire. Starting this business was indeed a challenge, both mentally and emotionally. I started the company after the death of my mother. I desperately needed to find my “next.” I knew that ministry was a mainstay, but there was a need to do something beyond the church. In 2016, I commented on a Facebook post dealing with relationships that my friend Saafir Malik posted. LeTonya Moore (my current business partner also commented on the same thread. Saafir being friends with both of us, suggested we connect as we shared many similar views on relationship dynamics. Once connected, she began to share with me a television show she’d done called Real Perspectives. She explained that she wanted to change and relaunch with a new format to include a male perspective and asked if I was interested in serving as the male co-host of the show? We began doing a weekly Facebook Live show, which ran for two years. As THe Real Perspective’s audience began growing, she helped me realize that people were starting to look to me for insight into some real serious issues and that I should consider creating a life coaching business. At that point, she began doing business coaching with me to help me understand business marketing and how to leverage my business by integrating my spiritual gift. Having the prophetic insight and clarity on God’s intent related to man’s purpose gives my company a spiritual-based edge. While developing and building this business, I have learned several things: 1.) We are not one-dimensional. Often, we as African Americans have been mentally conditioned to fit into the norm of traditional education, family, and career; only later, we realize our creator has designed us to follow a very different path. 2.)It takes great courage and fortitude to find that path and walk in it intentionally and unapologetically. Cultural and family expectations can railroad your purpose and affect your prosperity; therefore, it becomes critical to be grounded in knowing “who” you are and “why” you are. My company is an expression of who I am, what I believe, and my purpose on earth. I serve each of my clients with a genuine desire to see them live a fulfilled and prosperous life free of any mental and emotional debilitating thoughts that hinder their growth.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, but I now reside in Auburn, AL. If my best friend were coming to visit, I would first have a home-cooked meal prepared to consist of Brown Stewed Chicken, seasoned rice and peas, and sweet cream corn jalapeno cornbread. Auburn is about thirty minutes from Montgomery. The city is very rich in black civil rights history. I would have a day of visits to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and The Legacy Museum and the Rosa Parks Library, as well as the Freedom Rides Museum. There is a phenomenal restaurant in Downtown Montgomery named Daly’s. The food is historical, straight-up good!!!!!! So lunch there is a must. I live two hours away from Birmingham, another city full of black history, but it also has much better shopping than Auburn. I would certainly plan a full day of shopping and dining at the Summit. My best friends are low maintenance, so there is no need to have the entire week planned. My home is a place of relaxation and peace so that they can enjoy chilling and resetting before returning home.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Many people have played an impactful and influential role in my success. I would have to begin with my late mother and my late grandfather. They recognized very early that I was not necessarily a conformist but rather an outlier. They taught me to embrace my perspective and remain faithful to my purpose. They emphasized the mandate on my life would require being able to stand true to my beliefs even if that meant walking alone. Secondly, my church congregation has been a continuous source of inspiration and encouragement. They have allowed me to create a marketplace presence while continuing to serve as Pastor to them. They have been unselfish, supportive, helpful, and even pushed me to pursue an unchartered territory as it pertains to purpose. As it relates to what I am currently doing, I have to give shoutouts to Saffir Malik, CPA, and LeTonya Moore, Esquire. Both have served as powerful catalysts in life-changing decisions that propelled me into the current space I occupy. They challenged me, expanded my peripheral vision, and taught me to navigate the spaces between the ministry and the marketplace. They became prophetic voices that kept me aligned with my “next”.
