We had the good fortune of connecting with Dani Weiss and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dani, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
The most difficult decision I have made was to move my business and my life from Seattle to Atlanta. I had lived in Seattle for 30 years. Add the pandemic into the process, the transition has been a bit more challenging than I had anticipated.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What sets me apart from others as a photographers is that I am a very responsive and reliable person. I am also extremely creative. I work with my clients to come up with ideas that capture their families in the best light. My brand is fun and playful and I want to be sure to work with people that not only want to look their best but also includes having a great time when we make their images.
Some of the challenges I have encountered have been initially transitioning from film to digital and the constant upkeep of the newer equipment. I don’t think people realize that digital equipment is not only 4x as expensive it requires constant calibration to be sure your images are tack sharp.
Another challenge is always editing and working on images after the shoots. Before digital the professional labs worked on our images. Now we do it all. Unfortunately, our income hasn’t reflected the higher workload.
The most important lesson I have learned along the way is communication. I work with clients to capture some of the most important times in their lives. It is imperative for me to do a great job and be aware with my camera so I can capture those moments that will last a lifetime. I have had many 20-30 year relationships with clients. Photographing their weddings, families and their children’s Mitzvah’s. I have made it a lifetime commitment to keep in touch with clients.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since I still feel like a newbie here in Atlanta, some of the places I like to visit regularly are the High Museum, SCAD Museum, Oakland Cemetery, local festivals, Buford Hwy restaurants, East Atlanta and Decatur restaurants and of course the Civil Rights Museum,
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love a shoutout to Traci Sampson who is a local graphic designer and to Marc Takacs who is a local real estate agent/partner. Both have been helpful in getting my name out within the community.
