We had the good fortune of connecting with Mahamma and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mahamma, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking are for people with courage. Risk takers are people who don’t want to have a stagnant lifestyle. I’ve been taking risks ever since I decided was going to be my career. I took an even bigger risk when I decided being a full-time artist and then moving to Atlanta to pursue that.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an artist who wears many hats. I’m a vocalist, I’m a songwriter, I vocal produce, I play the guitar and piano (currently learning bass), and I am also a craft bartender! Throughout all these hats that I wear, I’ve learned plenty of lessons along the way, but there is one that they all have in common: “Perfection is the enemy of progress,” as they say. It’s a waste of time trying to reach for perfection when you don’t allow the natural progress of mistakes to happen. How else will you learn? I didn’t get here automatically knowing how wear all the hats that I wear but it took lots and LOTS of practice, patience, and making mistakes in order to learn.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Of course as a tourist, you must go to the touristy spots of course: Coca-Cola Museum, Botanical Gardens, etc. But Atlanta has so many other things to do and check out outside of that. I’m still learning about this city because I only moved here just two years ago. But a place where I take my friends when they come visit me is Johnny’s Hideaway. And if you’ve heard of Johnny’s then i know you’re already reading that sentence like “WHAT?” Yes, the “cougar bar.” But I PROMISE that’s not why I go. The play timeless music from all eras of music. They have a dance floor with a disco ball in the center and whoever dances there dances to be FREE. You can see in their faces and the ways they move their body that their just having a good time, no care in the world of what people are thinking. Everyone is there just having a good time, and i think that is so so beautiful to witness and be part of.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my big sister, Zadina. If it wasn’t for her, I would not be the musician I am today. My first memory of American music was her playing neo-soul artists such as Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Musiq Soulchild, etc. She is also the person who forced me (but it ended up working in my favor) to go to a performing arts high school because she realized my gift and did not want it going to waste by attending a regular, predominantly white high school. The decision ultimately changed my whole entire life.
