We had the good fortune of connecting with Figaro Figaro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Figaro, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the most important factor would be knowing how unique and different my product is. And knowing that there’s no other product on the market like it. So I use that to my advantage.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Well, I’m a self-taught pitmaster and cook. My work (food) focuses on Creole BBQ and as well as dishes that I create with influence through family members and music. My BBQ represents the deep history of Creole and island cuisine. What sets me apart from other pitmasters or cooks is that my style of cooking embraces my Creole heritage and the food I grew up eating. I love anything that involved cooking with fire, wood and various spices and large cuts of meat. my journey hasn’t been easy. Being a self-taught pit master was and is still a long learning process. The way i got better is by failing and failing some more. Every time I messed up a dish or burnt a piece of meat. I would stop and ask myself ” Ok, what did I learn from this experience?” Basically, I made sure not to make the same mistake multiple times. What I want the world to know about me is that God put me on this Earth to feed people…and that’s what I plan on doing no matter what.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That’s a difficult one because I moved to Raleigh, NC in February so I’m still trying to learn the area. Let’s see for food I would take them to Transfer Co. Food Hall. Specifically, Chhote’s, they have really good Indian food. During the week I would take him to a Duke basketball and Little city Brewing to check out NiiTO. They’re a local band that my fiancé and I really enjoy listening to. Oak city Brewery is another brewery that I really enjoy going to. The Willard lounge has really good drinks and the vibe is really chill. For a late-night snack I’m going with Fine Folks. Traditional American food but elevated flavors. Every dish there is amazing!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d have to give a shout out to Bryan Furman of Bryan Furman BBQ and Terrance “Big Perm” Nichols of Zilla Pits BBQ. I consider both of them to be friends as well as mentors. Both of them have given me business advice as well as opportunities to further help my business. And I can’t thank them enough. When, you come in contact with people that see your visions and want you to succeed, that’s rare. And people like that I consider more then just business owners. I consider them true friends.
