We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor for me has been consistency. There are plenty of people who are more intelligent and talented than I am, but I always view consistency as the main quality that can set me apart. I have no problem doing the same simple habits every single day with patience.
While I do value intensity in my daily habits, I’ve learned to prioritize consistency over intensity. With this mindset, I know that I don’t need to reach the finish line right away. Instead, I commit to growing and improving mentally, spiritually, and physically just a little bit everyday. When I do that, I’m always amazed when I look up years later and see how far those smalls steps of improvement have taken me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an author and entrepreneur with a passion for marketing, creative strategy and investing. Since a very young age, I’ve loved starting business endeavors and building products that provide value to my community. I grew up in an entrepreneurial household, and I was constantly learning from my parents and embracing their creative spirit. The passion for business started off on a simple level when I would sell used video games and toys with my best friend, Brandon, in elementary and middle school. Then as we got to high school, we built Young Moguls Brand, a clothing line that empowered young creators with merchandise infused with entrepreneurial messaging.
I continued developing this passion for business even when I went to college. I attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania where I received a degree in Economics and Marketing. I acquired so much knowledge in and outside of the classroom while I was at Wharton, and this led me to reflecting on all of my previous experiences and challenges through writing. During my junior year of college in 2019, I self-published my book “Breaking the System”. The book is a resource that empowers individuals to find their own unique lane in life and identify their passions and talents. The central theme of the book is that in order to improve any system or structure, you first have to be willing to fearlessly challenge its status quo. “Breaking the System” covers a variety of topics such as entrepreneurship, spirituality, authentic confidence, personal development, and more.
“Breaking the System” is extremely special to me because I was deeply involved in its creation from start to finish. From the writing to the cover design and promo materials, everything flowed through me and it was a fun opportunity to control the entire creative process. Going this route was an uphill battle, but it was even more fulfilling because the work became a canvas for me to fully and authentically express my inner passion.
Creating this book was a difficult process. It often involved wrestling with difficult emotions, exploring new ways of thinking, and challenging assumptions that I’ve held for years. In the end, this project was extremely therapeutic and led to instrumental breakthroughs in my life. This was an eye-opening experience that showed me how crucial writing is for me both professionally and personally. The time when I was writing “Breaking the System” was a challenging point in my life, but writing consistently gave me a refreshing sense of clarity.
I learned so much through this self-publishing process, but the most important lesson was to lean into vulnerability. Expressing my weaknesses and real emotions gave me the power to no longer let those things rule over me. Surprisingly, being honest with my weaknesses and fears gave me a strength and freedom that I’d never been able to tap into before. And most importantly, embracing vulnerability enabled me to connect with my peers on a deeper level and truly impact readers in a special way. It was a reminder that this project (and everything I work on in the future) is much bigger than just me. These are opportunities to fulfill my purpose by using my talents to give value back to the world.
Overall, I want my work and my story to encourage others to find and develop their own unique gifts. One of my favorite scriptures is Proverbs 18:16. I truly believe that the best way to get everything you want out of life is to first focus on offering as much value as possible to the world. Everyone has their own unique gifts and talents that they’ve been blessed with. And I want to push others to steward and develop those gifts wisely so that they can witness the amazing doors of opportunity that will begin to open for them in life.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a big Atlanta sports fan. So the first place I’d take a friend is to a Hawks game or a Braves game. The energy at the games is always amazing and it’s one of my favorite weekend activities. After the Braves game, I’d take them to go get some drinks at Sports & Social.
At some point in the weekend, I’d take them to go hang out at Topgolf and the High Museum. We’d have to stop and get food at one of my favorite go-to spots, Upbeet. Lastly… we’ll go check out another Braves game.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe so much to my parents, Floyd and Carla, and my sister, Carmen. My family has always been an incredible support system for me. They inspire me to never get complacent. They constantly surround me with love and encouragement. And they believe in me through the ups and the downs. So this shoutout is dedicated to them.
