We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Burchfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sam, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success I’ve had has been honesty and integrity. I think as an artist it is my mission to be a seeker of truth, to ask questions humbly and to write in a way that echoes the divinity of nature. So much content nowadays is propaganda, and I think that pursuing something honestly and with artistic integrity ultimately cuts through the clutter – even if it takes some time.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My artistic journey has been so explorative, and has really been about self-discovery. My wife (fellow artist, Pip the Pansy) really helped me dive deep on my previous record Graveyard Flower. Taking the time to hone in on what was important to explore for that record was huge. I thought about the importance of nature, and how it ultimately forces us to reckon with our own mortality. I’m not sure there is any question more looming than that of our mortality, so it seemed worthy of pouring all the time into. I’m incredibly proud of that record and the journey it took me on as an artist and individual. I think it is the truest thing I’ve created so far, and it seems to resonate most with my audience because of that.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well I live up in Jasper now, North Georgia, and I really do love it so much so I’d certainly take them around downtown there and on some hikes! But in the city, I used to live on Highland so definitely would walk explore Old Fourth Ward and walk to Krog Street Market and the beltline. Also, my personal favorite brunch spot is Sun In My Belly (I always get the Kirkwood Breakfast) so we’d have to go there. And then maybe we’d jet out to Arabia Mountain just outside of town for an awesome sunset and some hiking. Oh and certainly catch a show, maybe Eddie’s Attic in Decatur or Terminal West.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout to my music business professor at UGA, David Barbe. He, and the program he has cultivated, truly taught me so much about the music industry and about being an artist. My favorite quote of his is, ‘Never give yourself a fall back plan, or you will fall back on it.’
