We had the good fortune of connecting with Skye Loy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Skye, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that taking risks is very important when trying to improve and grow. Honestly, I wasn’t a huge risk taker before starting my business- I would call them moreso safe risks where there wasn’t much to gain or lose. However, my thought process and outlook on taking risks has changed greatly when starting SkyeLight. The risks I have taken in my business has improved my personal development, financial literacy, and public speaking amongst many other things. I’ve found that myself (and many others) perform better when there’s more pressure and factors at risk to impact you both negatively and positively. Risks should be weighed out in a risk-impact perspective to see how the the pros and cons would impact your life. I know that most times making a risk seems scary, but putting yourself in an uncomfortable position brightens your horizons and pushes you forward.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner/founder of Skyelight, a handmade home fragrance brand. We provide fragrant candles made from natural materials for individuals with busy lives that cherish their time at home. I created my company in 2019 while in college and realized there was a gap in the market for clean-burning fragrant candles. There were also rising concerns in the media about the effects of paraffin candle waxes from popular candle brands, so I decided to jump in the market since candles were one of my favorite things. I knew 2 things about my business from day one: it needed to be fun and it needed to be clean-burning. I launched Skyelight in November 2019 with my signature collection candles. The signature collection features whipped wax that doubles as home decor- they are cute and also functional to be used as a traditional candle. Our company grew a lot in the 2020 year with whipped candles being a newer concept and us being one of the first creators.

I’m really excited about growing Skyelight and introducing new products into the lineup in the future. I have a love for stationary, gift shops, and home decor- so maybe we will move that way in the future. I would say my journey into business was not easy. When I started Skyelight I was working two jobs and in college trying to make ends meet. I am currently a student pilot and work on my business full-time. Since graduating college, I’ve learned that getting very organized was the secret sauce to getting to this point. I prioritize tasks everyday and often think of things I can implement into my routine to improve my workflow. Although my organization and systems can improve, I noticed a drastic improvement in my planning since my college days. I have learned that it is normal to ask for help, to pay for systems that will improve customer experience, and also 100% OK to go back to the drawing board sometimes. Many times when I feel confused/discouraged in business, I’ll take it all they way back to the drawing board to see how I can improve my business strategies and grow.

I want people to know that changes in your life are on the other side of improving your daily habits and simply believing in your ability to achieve them. I started my business with no previous knowledge of business or e-commerce and as long as you have a willingness and drive to do it, the sky’s the limit.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m definitely a foodie and just relocated to a new area, but ill let you know some gems in the RDU- NC area. A great place to hang out and chill for a day is Duke gardens and the NC Museum of Arts. You can rent an electric bike by the museum of art and ride around the museum/ neighboring wealthy communities to smell the money (jkjk). I really like Durham, NC – its definitely growing and developing a ton. The baseball games at the Durham Bulls stadium is always fun to go to. If you want to drink, downtown Raleigh is the spot most people gravitate to. Depending on which friend it is, they may prefer a lit late night experience at Waffle House off Capital Blvd.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my loving husband who has been with me through everything since day one. Also, my amazing customers who support in all the ways they can- I’m so grateful to have their support.
