We had the good fortune of connecting with Eula (b.k.a. Reesey) Berry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eula (b.k.a. Reesey), what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe how a person goes through life depends on the the type of risks they take. The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward (maybe not always, but definitely a lot of times). There’s nothing wrong with living a quiet and safe life but when you take risks, you open yourself to a whole new world of experiences and opportunities.

Risk taking has been rewarding for me. Of course, there may have been losses but it’s all in how I perceived those losses and turned them into lessons that really helped shape how I moved forward.

I wouldn’t be where I am in my personal life or my career if it wasn’t for taking certain risks. Any time I have taken a risk on anything, it helped shape me and push me forward. Starting my business and brand was taking a big risk. I didn’t know if it would soar or flop but I did it anyway and look where I am with it 3 years later.

I constantly take a risk at putting my business out to others. I take a risk selling candles to people. I take a risk being a vendor at different events. I take a risk when I give to others, I take a risk loving others. I take a risk driving. I take a risk trying new foods. I take a risk networking and meeting new people. Everything we do is surrounded by taking risks essentially. If you aren’t taking any risks, are you really living your life?

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business, My baby – Essential Excellence Co!

I established a hand-poured soy candle business that in 2019 after I was working on some Mother’s Day boxes for 10 special mothers in my life. I just wanted to make something by hand to include in the box and chose candles randomly. Once gifted, I kept getting asked if there were more or if I was selling them and it’s kind of been a wrap ever since.

I launched the business by throwing myself a 30th birthday, business launch, and photography project reveal party. I just wanted my people to show up and see what I had going on and they did and have supported me ever since.

Essential Excellence Co, is an ode to me – every part of me. My first name is Eula and as you can see, I kept up with the E thing. All my candles are named with E words and they have encouraging quotes on them as well. It’s not just about the candles but also how they make people feel.

Truthfully, I got to where I am today by continuously putting in the work necessary, doing the things that I didn’t want to and never thought I would be doing, but the people who support me helped me get here. Everyone who has shared a post, shared a photo, shared a review, tagged me, purchased from me, or just blessed me with a donation or an opportunity is how I got here.

It wasn’t easy, still isn’t easy because there are constant challenges to face in order to progress with anything. It goes back to that risk thing. I take a chance on one thing and it leads to another, good or bad. Either way, I keep going.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s so many different ways I could go about this but I’ll start here…

My Maternal Grandmother, The Late Mildred Boyd Elder, has to be number one on the list because she was the epitome of a woman of Excellence. Without her leading our family the way she did, I wouldn’t be the way I am today.

If you still have living grandparents, love on them, watch them, sit and talk with them because there’s so much valuable information to gain from just being in their presence.

Outside of her, my parents, my paternal grandparents, my daughter, my brother and sister, my best friends, my business besties, and all the great people who are constantly supporting and pushing me – this shout out belongs to them.
