We had the good fortune of connecting with Danielle Van de Velde and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Danielle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When we moved to Singapore over eight years ago, we did so with my husband’s work. The unfortunate term for the employment pass holder’s partner in these situations is ‘a trailing spouse’. This didn’t sit too well with me for starters. My children took to international school from the get-go, my husband’s work had him travelling constantly – no change there but much easier from Singapore than Australia which is one of the reasons we moved. So I was left at home, in a beauitful new country with a lot of time on my hands. It only took about a month of yoga classes, mahjong lessons and lunches out with other ‘trailing spouses’ for me to realise how important it was to me to live a life of meaning and purpose. My inner practice was also advancing and my teacher back in Australia planted the seed, that it was time for me to teach others formally. I set up a business and started offering meditation classes and coaching. To my surprise, my classes and circles met a real need, courses filled quickly and I haven’t looked back.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My offering ranges from teaching meditation, to energy healing, spiritual mediumship, corporate workshops, talks and content production in the form of guided meditation tracks, my podcast and more recently my book Spirited. If I was to umbrella all of this I would say that I help people understand their mind/body/spirit system for vitality, purpose, intuition and joy. I believe my business has grown so quickly because I teach what I personally practice and know and I don’t regard what I ‘do’ as work, but rather an extension of who I am. I am most proud of clients who are willing to shift their perspectives, do their work, heal themselves and reach for a better life. Second to that I am so proud of my first published book Spirited: A guide to your innate spiritual design to transform your life. This is a culmination of insights gained from teaching a lot of people how to meditate and holding thousands of intuitive healing sessions. Greatest challenges was to ask for help and invest in necessary platforms to accommodate the rapid growth. Looking back now, these were the best challenges to overcome. I want the world to know that what you are naturally passionate about, is connected with your purpose, and when you align with and express that unique purpose, you access a state of flow and expansion.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
With travel opened up in South East Asia, this itinerary is limitless. Singapore itself, although a small island is rich and vibrant from the local hawker centres, to Little India and China town, to the Arab quarter, to the jungles and coast lines. I would definitely take them to Bintan or Batam islands, in Indonesia, by boat from Singapore and also pop over to Java, Indonesia to visit the temples and contemporary art scene there. Phuket in Thailand is resort heaven. A week’s bike ride adventure though northern Thailand is also a must, and Angkor Wat, Cambodia is also a favourite. There are too many delights of South East Asia to list here…a week is not enough!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
