We had the good fortune of connecting with Dee Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dee, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process in starting my own business began with not wanting to work a regular job. Paychecks take so long to receive and my jobs were never my passion. I was already a freelance photographer for some years before I applied for my LLC so the transition was easy for me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started out as a music artist in poetry, spoken word, and rap doing open mics and talent shows in Mississippi, my home state. Once I gained a core fanbase, I continued as an artist and engulfed myself into photography and Youtube vlogs with my friends in 2013.
Then I learned in order to be successful, I have to gain many talents the average “rapper” doesn’t have. That thought has made me a better entrepreneur in my business and everyday life. It wasn’t easy getting to where I am today because I’ve had various challenges along the way.
It took me 8 years to complete my Electrical Engineering degree, and was still difficult finding a job for my field. Once I started my acting career with Tyler Perry, Donald Glover, Irv Gotti, etc. Those jobs wanted me however by then, my life trajectory has been going up fast. Things are going great for me now.
I learned to never give up on your dreams and if you are serious, don’t compromised for anyone if you truly believe in yourself. I want to tell the world that I am a “try-er” and I have “blind faith”. Meaning I may fail sometimes but I succeed as well. I believe in me and no one can stop me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I currently live in Atlanta, College Park area. I would first take them to Patchwerk Studios to record some music. Secondly, my favorite places to eat are Slutty Vegan, Slush ATL, and Taco Mac. However I do like to try new places since Atlanta has an endless amount of food spots. I personally love to ride the Marta Train downtown to sight-see. If there was one place I’d tell my friend to go see is Little Five Points. I just love the vibe out there.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shoutout my business partners and long-time friends, Kameron de Verteuil, Aaron Jones and Justin Holliday, for encouraging me to continue with my goals and dreams prior to me moving to Atlanta. Even though I have known them since 2010, they have supported me since 2012 and we’ve been on this journey ever since.
