We had the good fortune of connecting with Pamela Tetteh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pamela, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started Melanated Hair & Body.co because i suffer from eczema which is a medical condition where your skin and almost sometimes scalp becomes inflamed with dry, itchy patches. My skin would get unmoisturized within hours, start to flake and itch really bad. I wanted to create products that helped me to have smoother, moisturized, healthy and glowing skin (MHBC slogan). I made a batch for myself in the summer of 2020 before heading back to school and months later a great friend of mine Crystal made her first order with me and it went from there! Officially establishing Melanated Hair & Body.co LLC on January 19th,2021. ( As we recently hit our 1 year Anniversary and now are 1 year and 6 months in!)

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

MHBC stands for Melanated Hair & Body.co Created and started to appreciate the Melanated hair and skin I was born in. MHBC gives you a variety of Whipped Buttès, Whipped Suga Scrubs, Body Oils & Perfumes. Whipped Crèmes, Hair Soufflès, Hair Serums, Soap bars and more.. Going into the mindset of loving the hair and skin I’m in while also taking care of it. Embracing all my imperfections and knowing that’s what makes me ME!

For MHBC, I’m excited about what’s to come! Everyday, every week, every month there’s something new for me to learn, experiment and launch out into the world! I look to other business owners who are in the same field as me and are thriving in their craft.

Was it easy? No- with owning a company/business it requires for you to have discipline, patience and an open mind. These traits are gained through experiences that shape you. Discipline to wake up early even when you want to sleep in, organize your files/supplies, SAVE and stay on task, etc… Patience to be steady even when it feels shaky, to breathe through each and every process no matter what you think the outcome may be. An open -mind because we always look for new ways to expand our businesses, and there’s always a new trend or way to gain more exposure. being open to trying new things because change is hard yes but at times it benefits us in the long run.

Reminding myself why I started MHBC, where I want to see this go and to never give up on what I want no matter the trials and tribulations that come because I will always be working for the betterment of myself, my businesses, and my future.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in the Bronx so i would first take them to the bodega to get a classic chopped cheese with everything on it because thats the only best way to eat it. Then take the train (you never know what you get in terms of entertainment lol) to head down to Brooklyn because Brooklyn has all the good eats and hidden places to shop, chat and have fun at! Depending on the weather to go on a picnic at the Brooklyn Bridge Park! The views are amazing and who doesn’t love sipping some rosé or chilled drinks while watching the sunset and vibing out to some chunes!

In my opinion, the most fun and interesting places to check out are cultural fests like gatherings, parties, dance classes or artistic classes in general.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout to my Family, friends and ESPECIALLY God!!

My parents helped me to fund my first mixer and supplies to start MHBC! Making an investment in something that I loved and wanted to pursue in- super grateful and blessed. My friends for always supporting me, encouraging me, sharing and purchasing from my baby. I truly appreciate it.

And of course i can’t leave out my biggest hype-man God. He’s the giver of all things and has sustained me through all the blood, sweat, tears, late nights and all the things in between. Without him there would be no MHBC. My faith and endurance are two of the strongest gears that has helped me to sustain this business, lifestyle and self.

All the business owners out there that are doing the damn thing- KEEP THRIVING AND BELIEVING IN YOURSELF AND YOUR CRAFT! I see y’all and we’re just getting started.
