We had the good fortune of connecting with Tarik Carroll and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tarik, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
A good work / life balance is something that I am still struggling to maintain. Over the years and specifically during the pandemic I’ve truly realized the importance of self care and really leaning into that. I am truly still a work in progress but I indeed have made strides to improve since my early days as a photographer

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Over the past 5 years Ive really been able to lean into my purpose by creating fashion portraiture that showcases true diversity and inclusion. Ive been able to create fashion editorials truly highlighting fat bodies and crafting imagery that challenges outdated beauty standards. Battling self doubt & consistent push back from the fashion industry, this journey has been far from easy. The one thing I have learned over the years is the importance of being as authentic as possible as an artist and to really embrace what make you unique. Its truly about finding your niche and building community through your art.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Domino Park in Williamsburg is really fun during the summer! Amazing place to get a great view of the skyline and theres alot of amazing things to get into in the surround area. I also enjoy a rooftop moment at West light at the William vale hotel also located in the Willams burg section of Brooklyn. The Holler is a super fun in the cut type of bar located in Clinton Hill. Amazing place to meet locals and the frozen drinks HIT. For a nice park day, I enjoy laying out in the grass in Prospect Park which is the prefect escape from the hustle and bustle of NYC.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wanna send love to Emil WIlbekin and the Native Son Platform. Their content is so uplifting especially as a black queer creative it feels great to feel seen, recognized and supported.. Emil is such an Icon and true trail blazer and I just want to send some love and commend him for all of his contributions to the culture and the LGBTQIA+ Community.
