We had the good fortune of connecting with Zuly Palomino and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zuly, how does your business help the community?
This art is a source of income for high Andean families and we also maintain the traditional techniques of this art by dedicating ourselves to making the Retablo Ayacuchano (altarpieces) of Peru in the United States.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I grew up and developed in the small craft workshop of my parents and my grandparents in Peru. My art means everything to me. I value ancestral knowledge, showing the rural life in the Coast, Andes and the Amazon from Peru. I didn’t studied art. I make a type of art called (Retablos) 3DMixed Media Sculpture in cedar wood boxes and with various sculpted elements of various things that show the daily life of the Peruvian indigenous people, and their traditions. I still practice an old family technique is the use of potato dough and plaster of Paris. I mix both components until I make a dough and make figurine by figurine and let it dry in the air. Once dry, I begin with the painting and place it on the altarpiece or painting or I can leave it as an ornament, then I will pass the varnish on each work.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to the Rhode Island Latino Arts-La Galería del Pueblo, as well as the Gondola Ride WaterFire, Roger Williams Park and Botanical Garden.
