We had the good fortune of connecting with Travis Scarbro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Travis, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Growing up, I knew one thing for certain… I love movies, and I love horror, and I love horror movies. I love everything about them, from the awesome over-acting, to the sets, the lights, the sounds, the gore, the music. Summers at my Grannies house were spent watching and re-watching the old classic monster and horror movies on VHS and this what at a very young age made me realize exactly what I wanted to do, I wanted to make spooky music for film. I began my endeavors in music with the guitar, this lead me through the years having touched and played most instruments. In my early twenties, my brother Trey and I were trying our hand at getting acting gigs, but I was never much for acting, I just wanted to play music. We, inclusive of my brother and a few likeminded and willing friends were all pitching ideas and bleeding out the little money we had and or acquiring small family loans to try and make a movie or a music video, just anything that was new and creative. I had of course solicited myself as a music composer in the community and I got a couple of random little gigs composing for a few short student films, and a sci-fi t.v. pilot that may or may not still be in talks. As fun as it is, the cold truth was quickly and quite bluntly realized for what it was, making something is very hard and expensive. What I had at this point was a bunch of instruments and recording equipment, a crappy apartment, and the confidence in knowing I didn’t really want to work for someone else and trying to film anything is costly. Start small, I thought, you’ll get there eventually. Okay, no problem. The year is 2015, and a thought dawned on me while trying to unsuccessfully find something cool or good to watch, I thought of a neat horror story idea of what I’d like to see but could not find anywhere, and then the thought of “well yeah, that sounds nice but how do I get to enjoy this story?” and then the thought of something that had really died out but is starting to have it’s resurgence, the radio play. I’ll start a podcast that’ll be like the old time radio plays with a tales from the crypt style horror and cheekiness, perfect. And so it became, Strange Fantasy Show was born.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I feel that Strange Fantasy Show is uniquely bold and hauntingly original, each story possesses the strength to scare you, to captivate you, to keep you thinking long after the show is over, it’s something new that you haven’t quite seen or heard before, it goes against the grain and beyond the boundaries of conventional horror, it’s old school and it’s new school, much how there are things that stand the test of time and we cherish as classic, so shall Strange Fantasy Show be hopefully looked upon one day. I’m proud to announce that season six just wrapped up and the numbers and audience response was wonderful as always; Ashley, Michael, and Myself are nearly finished with writing season seven which will premier in October, available anywhere you get your podcasts. Now, the most exciting news to date that I can share is this. Strange Fantasy Show has successfully filmed a full length pilot episode which is currently in post-production. The pilot episode is entitled “The Nightmare Phantom” and is a screenplay adaptation of our very first show episode of the same name. The pilot episode is directed by Ashley Scarbro, the director of Photography is Tommy Chase, and it stars Michael Song, Ty Anderson, and Morgan Clyde as the Phantom. We are currently in talks to shop around the series, so stay tuned, more wickedness this way comes. Lastly, i just want to say that it was an immense amount of fun and stress to be able to make a movie with your best friends, but always remember, it’s always worth it, so go for it.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
