We had the good fortune of connecting with Akira Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Akira, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started out working in a hair store at 17 years old. After working there for awhile I realized how much I enjoyed doing my job. I enjoyed helping women feel beautiful. Sometimes I would get clients of my own and do hair after work or on my days off. I just loved the feeling and that’s when I knew the beauty industry was meant for me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started braiding hair at the young age of six. As I found my love for hair, I began taking my first set of clients at the age of twelve. My clients at the time were family and friends but they still treated me as a little professional. At seventeen I began my first job at a beauty supply store which was a huge outlet for me.
Working there, I started to explore by trying different hairstyles, I would have a new look almost every week. I gained a lot of clientele from that job because I was my own walking billboard. So I started taking clients after work and on my days off. Some at my home, some at their homes, even have some clients come to my friend’s house.
After several years of obstacles, I now operate my own salon suite called Glam Amo Beauty Bar located in Belcamp MD (Harford County) available for everyone to come to take a seat in my chair or shop with me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First I would take her to a day out at the inner harbor to show her what it’s like. Maybe we could grab something to eat from there so a little shopping and chill. Then I’ll probably take her to couple of bar and lounges that I know she would like. Take her to my favorite spa and have a girls day. Hit a cool brunch spot for a chill vibe. When I’m with my bestie the day could go so many ways but it’s always fun.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my other moms Lutricia and Cherry Ann. They both played a huge role in my life blood couldn’t make us any closer and I love them dearly . Next is my beautiful mentor Dr. Stacey Venable she is the absolute best and I love her as well. She keeps me on the straight and narrow and I appreciate her for that. I also want to shoutout to all the people that have supported me throughout my entire journey thus far. You guys are a huge blessing to me and I love you as well.
