We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseph` Lambert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joseph`, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I actually started my business when I was 12 years old! At that time, my parents went through a divorce and it was a tough time for all of us. As the oldest of 5 kids, I wanted to do what I could to earn some money to help cover some of my expenses for school and other things. So I started a little landscaping business on my street in Sandy Springs. That business grew and I had customers throughout my neighborhood. When I was 15, I partnered with a friend from my school who could drive. His name was Sam. Sam had a van, which greatly expanded our service area and revenue. While doing landscaping jobs, customers would frequently ask me to haul off their junk. One day, I made close to $2,000 in just a few hours hauling junk. I realized that there was great potential in the junk removal business. When I was 16, I purchased my own truck which allowed me to do more junk hauling. And when I was 17, I decided to focus exclusively on junk removal. That’s when “Joseph’s Junk Removal” was officially born. Over the past 3 years, we have experienced tremendous growth. COVID was hard for all of us in so many ways. But I am thankful that Joseph’s Junk Removal grew during that time. We now have 30 employees, 8 branded trucks, and a revenue well above one million. We are projecting 2x growth in 2022. I turn 21 this summer. And I am extremely grateful to be experiencing success as a young entrepreneur.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
There are a lot of good junk removal companies out there who can get the job done. At Joseph’s Junk Removal, we try to be different by being the fastest and friendliest junk removal business around. By being fast and friendly, we get a lot of repeat business. In fact, 30% of our revenue comes from repeat business.
We try hard to win trust and loyalty from the first point of contact that folks have with us. We are also different in that for us, we are driven by something more significant than junk removal. Joseph’s Junk Removal team wants to make people’s lives better. Our motto is “Clear Your Junk, Clear Your Mind.” Junk and clutter at one’s home or business can be stressful and frustrating. It really does feel good to clear up space and get rid of stuff that’s in your way. We get a lot of satisfaction when we can help people to breathe easier by hauling off their unwanted stuff.
I’ve learned a lot along the way in building Joseph’s Junk Removal. A big lesson is the importance of building a team of employees that is united around a clear vision and values. We are careful in who we hire. We want team members who are going to treat our customers with respect and fairness. And on the other side, we aim to take good care of our employees by celebrating their accomplishments and compensating them well for their work.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to a Braves game for sure. Even if you don’t like baseball, experiencing the Battery and Truist Park is a great time. So we would probably begin on a Friday night with dinner in the battery and then a ball game. On Saturday, I would take them on a day trip up to north Georgia to experience some of the beautiful things to do up that way. And then on Saturday night, we would swing through Roswell and have dinner on Canton Street. Once I turn 21, I’d take them to one of the awesome Roswell breweries :-). On Sunday, I would take them to my church, Christ Covenant (close to Sweetwater Brewery) which is a great place to get some inspiration. Then on Sunday afternoon, I would take them on a hike of Stone Mountain so they could get some exercise and enjoy the best view of Atlanta you can find.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents were very instrumental in my success. They modeled hard work and encouraged creativity for my siblings and me.
I also have had several mentors, outside of my family, who have had a significant impact on me. A guy at my church named Chris Millen hired me to help him with his contracting business when I was 12 years old. Chris taught me a lot about what it takes to run a small business – especially how to treat customers.
At this point in my life, I have a handful of mentor relationships that I have personally sought out. I pursue every opportunity I can to learn from others succeeding in life and business.
