We had the good fortune of connecting with Riquel Angela and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Riquel, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I chose to pursue a Creative Career because I have always been artistic from a young age. I grew up singing and performing in the Church Choir, School Chorus group, and acting in School Plays. I Admire all things that are considered Art. When I started college as Business Student, I knew something was missing. I missed performing and being able to express myself through my passion for the arts and acting. I then changed my major and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Performance and a Minor in Business Administration. I’ve always felt that my personality was too big to sit behind a desk. Since graduating, I’ve grown as an artist and an Actress. I have been able to work on film and tv production sets as a background Actor, a Stand-in Actor, and a Casting Associate. I also started my own Youtube Channel and taught myself how to film and produce my own videos. Once the Pandemic happened, I uncovered more of my artistic gifts like starting and producing my own Podcast and creating content for different brands to use on social media. I’m focusing on growing as Beauty and Lifestyle Content Creator. I also enjoy painting during my free time. I find joy in being able to create what I’ve visualized in my mind through my art of Video Content Creation.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Growing up, I wanted to be an actress on the big screen. My journey of pursuing my acting dreams initially started when I was 13 after completing a performance project in my English class. I expressed to my mother how much I wanted to be an actress, and she enrolled me in my first modeling and acting class. In my high school play, I performed the role of Motormouth Maybelle in the show “Hairspray”. In college, I got the opportunity to act in a couple of stage plays as well as, work behind the scenes on sound, lights, and props.

When I moved to Atlanta, I knew that I wanted to pursue my acting career in Flim and Tv. I booked many background acting roles, which later led to me being a stand-in actor for several shows, to getting an opportunity to work at the Tyler Perry Studios as a Casting Associate with an Extras Casting company, CAB Castings. A few years ago, I started my Youtube Channel and started my Podcast. I recently added a new role under my belt as a Content Creator. This journey has not been an easy ride and I’m still holding on. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized in life we go through so many challenges that shape us into who we are. If I didn’t take that leap of faith to move to Atlanta, I wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity to step foot at the Tyler Perry Studios.

One of the biggest challenges I had to overcome was figuring out my life after the pandemic. When the Pandemic started I was pregnant at the time and I knew that I couldn’t jump back into working on set as soon as I hoped. I began to rediscover myself and decided to turn my focus towards my other talents like being a YouTuber, a podcast host, and now a digital content creator who creates content for brands. I’m also in the process of rebranding my Podcast. I enjoy making Beauty and Lifestyle Content. One thing about me, I am going to put my all into anything that I do. I am someone who has the tenacity and the passion to go after my dreams. Like my mom would say, “sometimes you may have to take the back door to get to where you want to go.” I am still passionate about acting, so when the time is right everything will happen just how it’s supposed to. All I know is there’s still so much more for me to achieve and I’m just getting started.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting I would take them anywhere we can eat. I’m a huge foodie. I love trying out new foods and restaurants, food is an experience for me. I would take my friend all over Atlanta and the surrounding cities. We would have to visit Ponce City Market, that place is vibe I love how it’s both indoors and outdoors, you can shop and eat and even take a nice stroll or bikeride on the Beltline. I would even visit the Battery at the Truist Park Baseball stadium. We can go to a Braves Baseball game and eat at Fox Brothers Bar-B-Q or attend a concert at the Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre. I like the Frose’ Drink from the Punch Bowl Social. We could go to the Foxx Theatre in Midtown and watch a live stage play. Take a hike at Stone Mountain on a Saturday morning. Maybe even visit the Georgia Aquarium. Some of my favorite restaurants I would take my best friend to is The Slutty Vegan, Jinya Ramen Bar, Capital Grille, Juicy Crab, and my new favorite place the Peach Cobbler Cafe.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to first Shoutout My Mother and My Husband, they have been the most supportive of my pursuit of following my dreams and growing as an Artist. My mom was the one who enrolled me in my first Acting class at 13 years old. My husband watched me day in and day out working hard in College. He would stay up late to help me memorize my lines for my performances. He even traveled along with me to Atlanta when I booked my first background role on a Tv Show. These two have played a significant role in encouraging me to follow my dreams. I also want to Shoutout the Essential Theatre Department at my alma mater Florida A & M University, for my Bachelor’s degree and the opportunity to perform. As well as Clive Bailey, the Casting Producer and CEO of CAB Castings. He booked me my first background role, my first standing role, and hired me as a Casting Associate on his team. I appreciate him and the work he has put in to give actors like myself an opportunity.
