We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendal S. Turner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kendal S., we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I believe in order for anyone to be successful in whatever craft or career they are pursuing, they must be able to think outside of the box, be willing to be uncomfortable and not afraid to take risk. I have always been a risk taker. The biggest risk I took was moving to Atlanta after being laid off from my job of 12 years. I moved to a place where I didn’t know anyone and made a name for myself performing poetry on many stages.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a poet before anything else. Poetry is what made people listen to me and opened the door for many other opportunities. Poetry evolved into becoming an author. I have written 5 books. Being an author opened the door for public speaking. Public speaking opened the door to acting. I like to wear many hats. I believe the thing that sets me apart from anyone else is my authenticity. I stand in my truth. I am proud of who I am so I don’t try to mimic anyone or aspire to be anyone but a better version of myself. The biggest lesson I’ve learned from being an artist is to own what makes you different and to be willing to stand alone if it means not walking the path everyone else takes.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am not much of a host or the night life type. I prefer to be on the couch in my sweats, eating pie and watching a good movie lol. But if I was going to take a friend somewhere in the city, it would most likely be the little 5 points area and the belt line. I like to check out the boutiques or ride bikes on the trails and people watch.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out my wife for being a supportive backbone during the hard times when I was chasing my dreams and struggling to make ends meet. Her faith in me is unwavering. The book that changed my life and got me on the path to enlightenment was “ask and it is given” by Esther and Jerry Hicks. That book changed the trajectory of my life.
