We had the good fortune of connecting with Bayadir Mohamed-Osman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bayadir, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Growing up, I have always been fascinated by poetry and hip/hop because of the storytelling and wordplay. In my undergraduate experience, I found my voice through poetry. I had a story to tell about being a Sudanese American refugee living in the United States. The arts are a tool and vessel to educate people on causes and bridge the community. My poetry helps me educate people about racism, sexism, Islamophobia, and the oppression in Sudan.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My long-term career aspiration is to support building Sudan’s health infrastructure. To reach this career goal, I have worked on a variety of projects and settings to ensure I am a well-rounded individual. Currently, I am pursuing my Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and working at a consulting firm in international development. Prior to that, I supported young adults with disabilities to gain professional development and meaningful employment. I value community engagement and ensuring the communities I serve have a seat at the table.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I loved the time I lived in Washington D.C. the city is filled with so much culture and history. I would take them to an Ethiopian restaurant, visit new art exhibits, and scooter throughout the city.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am grateful for the support of my loved ones, professional mentors such as Meg Weekes, and my social media following. Thank you to all who have attended my poetry events, donated to the causes, purchased my book, and affirmed my life.
