We had the good fortune of connecting with Ivory Burden and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ivory, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I started out, I did it as a hobby because I love accounting. Working in corporate so long, I had to work under someone’s direction and I decided I wanted more ownership of what I do and who I want to work with. Once I saw how big the demand was for my services I decided to turn it into a full time business. Where I come from, I did not know people who owned businesses. I moved to Atlanta in 2010 and it was mind blowing to see so many entrepreneurs. Once I realized my “why”, I knew this was what I was supposed to do. I am a problem solver and to be able to help business owners figure out their finances and help them organize and understand their numbers gives me purpose.
What should our readers know about your business?
I have an accounting firm that offers full service bookkeeping and payroll to small business owners. I have been in this industry for over 20 years and I am passionate about my work. What sets me apart?? Every single one of my clients become family. I am vested in the success of your business as if it were my own. I take pride in my work and I am fulfilled when I have been able to help others. I decided to start my business after being in corporate and constantly having doors shut and not being given the opportunities to grow like I wanted. I wanted more ownership and control over my day to day schedule in addition to making time for my children. As a single mom, you rely on a steady paycheck and although having my own business was always a dream, I was scared to take the leap. It was definitely scary, but it was THE BEST thing I could have done for myself.
Some of the lessons I have learned in my journey are to accept and learn from failure, never stop learning, and give back to the community (talent, time, and/or resources).
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
With everything Atlanta has to offer, a weekend is just not enough!! I would definitely take my friend to the battery. Catch a Braves games and stop by Punch Bowl Social for some karaoke. Take an early morning hike up Stone Mountain and head to Ponce City Market for lunch and shopping. We would go to The Painted Pin for some bowling and Roc South Cuisine for the AMAZING lamb chops, mac and cheese and collard greens. Chateau Elan for a wine tasting, The Beltline trails, Centennial Park, and a stop at the Center for Civil and Human Rights just to name a few more places. Atlanta has some awesome brunch spots but I would definitely stop by Toast on Lennox and head over to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens before my bestie heads home.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people that provide support and encouragement to me on a daily basis but my family is amazing. My children encourage me daily. I know they are watching me so it makes me better everyday. My mother and aunt are my therapists! I do not know where I would be without them.
My Children – Ronee Cook and Jaylon Cooper
My Mom – Georgennea Gillison
My Aunt – Beverly McBride
And last but not least, my Sorors of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated. I have some AMAZING Sisters, who support me and mentor me and I love them all!
