We had the good fortune of connecting with GenX Semaria and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi GenX, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My original purpose behind creating my business was money and safety. I would love to portray an image of a strong black woman. One who knew what she wanted out of her life and a business. The truth of the matter is that I was “chasing the dream”. Looking for quick cash and quick return on all my investments over night. I wanted the “ultimate entrepreneurial victory”, you know the “Rags to Riches story. It was much more less structured and more about curiosity and pure desperateness. I gifted my company to myself for Valentines Day. The registered corporation was active, and just sitting at this point. Its almost like choosing a college, and asking your counselor for advice. Its the same thing I did on YouTube. I searched for every, How to, Step by step, and Vlog I could find. The main thing I learned from YouTube is that, everything is not for me. Now that I had had over 1.1M views on my website, I now know what’s important to me. A “passionate balance” and peaceful environment, where I get to create, grow and network. I will name for you 10 things I did differently in order to recreating my thought process for the reason I wanted a business in the first place.
1.) I began to pray more, I asked GOD to forgive me and others who have hurt me in my life.
2.) I used new and different types of journals to write, mind dump, and decompress.
3.) I intentionally depend on GOD for my needs.
4.) I identified my main focus, created structure, and wrote my goals down.
5.) I did it with my “internal” fears, anyway!
6.) I started to celebrate my accomplishments and reward myself.
7.) I made a plans to scale and grow my business.
8.) I started being committed to my calendar, not my planner.
9.) I followed up more and improved systems already in place.
10.) And last but not least, I intentionally made strategic planning a priority and daily task.
It wasn’t until I became the first Published Author in my family did I understand. It was a normal day and me and my oldest daughter was chilling. She looked up at me, smiled and said, “Mama I want to be an Author too”. This is one of the only epic moments where I knew that I had to reach even higher milestones. That night I submitted two different books to be published through Amazon KDP. After that night I declared, “My daughter will be the youngest Author in our family”. At aged 11 my daughter had helped me get my full circle, moment where my “why” was clarified. Through the child I gave birth to as a senior attending Banneker Highschool, Class of 2012. She helped redefine my thought process behind everything I did from now on. Now I host a DIY Digital Publishing class, sponsored by my local library. With one mission in mind. Help develop 1,000,000 new Authors by January 2023. Giving GOD all of the glory for the wisdom I have found once I humbled myself. I had to lose being comfortable and change my mind to “always adapting”. I have peace knowing that I can spend the rest of my life, helping others reach generational milestones.
The one thing that once before, stopped me became the same blessing that helped me. My thought process. My secret thoughts of “unworthiness” helped me continually sabotage my life and business. Once I was able to see what really mattered I understood why I must stay uncomfortable. If that’s all it takes to show my children what is possible for them, its worth it. I acknowledged feeling not good enough or smart enough and embraced myself wholly, this time. That old shame evolved into my new strength.
This is where journaling became my go to friend and confidant. My perspective about myself had changed. I no longer saw a little girl who didn’t make good choices, which is why I deserved to be kidnapped and sexually assaulted in the 7th grade. I now see that no, I came in contact with a child predator and this 40- something man had a lack of ethical judgement, integrity, and emotional intelligence and abused a child. Now that I know the truth, I accept my part in every situation but I no longer carry the burdens of others. Which is a burden now lifted off of me.
My journal allows me to do 3 things effectively; organize my thoughts, identify my emotions, and helping me stay committed to intentional healing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a Author, Poet and Creative Content Producer my experience sets me apart. Born in Atlanta Ga I was raised to get a job, get a car, and go to school. Nothing is easy about operating outside of your cultural norm. It feels lonely but its truly not. The more you stay in your lane, the more you are able to see all of the other sub lanes in the midst of your own. I overcame the challenges of losing 2 siblings in 1 year with only the help of GOD. I felt weak and even more unworthy to lead. In my brokenness I found true understanding of what is peace. I want the world to know that my coaching brand is Encouraging women and men like me to know that you are worthy to lead and GOD is the only qualifier. My #1 lesson that I had to learn in over 20 plus years is stated so well through another Author. “Shame is our greatest measure of courage” – Brene Brown
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spots would include Wine down Wednesday at Centennial Park, Jamaican food from Northside Drive and end the night on Moreland Avenue at the drive- in movie theater. I’m an introvert so we are definitely going to be inside most of the trip. She is on vacation, I am not, lol. If I had a best friend they would know this about me. I don’t drink and large crowds are not my thing.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost I want to thank GOD for all of the opportunities in front of me and for the negative people taken away from me. GOD knows who has your best interest, so trust the process. I also want to thank my children for being so patient with mommy. My children are my team. I also want to thank the owner of Infinite Suites, LLC located in Alpharetta, Ga for being my “Wisdom Advisor”. Tarelyn is the one who keeps me focused on what’s important. I also want to thank the founder and CEO of HER HEADQUARTERS for helping me discover brand partnership deals that I’ve been looking for. Carina Glover and her Superwoman, Erica. They both have inspired me to scale my business faster and more efficiently. Erica created me a partnership template that allows me to send proposals to any company that share the same mission as me. And last but not least I want to thank Fulton County Metropolitan Library for sponsoring my DIY Digital Publishing Master Class held on 04/12 & 04/19 3pm-6:30pm.
