We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Gloria Pope and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Gloria, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Black Girl Everything LLC was created to promote successful and creative women within my circle. In early 2020, I was inspired to create a platform to promote businesses. This business started as one event and has grown into a movement. BGE now hosts several events during the year, where vendors sell products, the artist performs, and the community comes to support. The collective was established as a pathway to support the greatness of the BIWOC (Black & Indigenous Women of Color) community.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The brand Dr. Glo starts with a desire to help and teach others. At a young age, we used to play school at home, and that’s when I realized I wanted to be involved in education, not the classroom but still be an educator. Black Girl Everything has made it possible for me to educate and support individuals in their life passions. I found that my career started so young, and I’ve always stayed on the same path. Every experience I’ve had, from going away to college to working with non-profits and being a GED instructor each experience has built up who I am. As the Executive Director of Collin Allen Child Development center, I can influence and support the growth of Young children and their families. In addition, I am also the Director of Academic Enrichment at Destination Tomorrow, the Bronx LGBTQ center. I am tasked with supporting the queer community. As an educator, I felt the need to share my story of infertility. As a result I wrote the book, HERO: Memoirs of Infertility.

Even with these phenomenal accomplishments, I continue to find ways to give back to the community. By starting and developing Black Girl Everything, I provide a space for others. Daisy Dream Project, my newest venture, is my greatest goal. This non-profit was established to create a safe space for families, especially for families of preschoolers with diagnosed disabilities. With the creation of the organization, I feel complete. I feel as if I have realized my purpose completely. I am meant to be everything.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am in love with my city. Being from “Money Earnin” Mount Vernon comes with the level of accomplishment. Mount Vernon is centrally located in Southern Westchester and provides access to many neighboring towns. Many believe that anything north of NYC is upstate NY, even though Mount Vernon shares boarders with The Bronx.

With a visit from a best friend for the week, we would explore the greatness within this small city to all the places around us. I would start with some of the staples of the community, like Brush Park, where the community comes to watch sports during the day. We would check out the trail along Bronx River to enjoy the scene. Brunch in White Plains at one of the classy restaurants on Mamaroneck Ave. We will then enjoy the nightlife of Harlem at some of the best Black-owned establishments.

Because I believe in rest, we would spend real-time right at my home, ordering food from some small restaurant around the community. This place has been built to establish peace in serenity. Between the fire pits, pool, and tree hammock, the Garden & Oasis is a retreat on its own.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have been blessed with the opportunity of having great people in my life. I value positive and negative experiences as they shaped me into who I am today. My aunts and uncles were influential in developing my desire to want more from my life from my childhood. I looked up to them and the simple things they had accomplished, which as a child were so big. Now, as an adult, I have reached their heights and more.

Gaining insight to be my best self was always inspired by them. I value their presence in my life as I know they have helped me be the best me.
